I was discussing this with a friend of mine. What makes a champion a "great" champion? My friend for example believes Lex Luger to be the greatest U.S. Champion ever because he held the belt for 500+ days. I disagree, but don't really have a set standard by which I judge these things. What about y'all?

Please. Nikita Koloff was the best NWA U.S. Champion of all-time.

Well, the greatest NWA US Champ of all time is a tough one to call, but it's sure as heck not Lex Luger. One might say Flair, only because he was such a great draw, but he's better know for being the greatest NWA Heavyweight champ of all time. Personally, my favorite was Rick Rude. (not sure if it was WCW exclusive at that point or not)
I voted X factor.

Yeah, I don't see this poll getting many votes in anything but the last two options, since this is a fairly knowledgeable crowd. If I had to just pick one of those single options, I'd go with quality of title matches, but it's definitely a combination of several factors.

If I were to put my opinion on this subject into words it would be this: The best US champ should be the wrestler who made the most impact on the industry as a whole while holding that belt.
I do not mean the person who held it longest or the person who was seen by the largest number of people. Ric Flair would not be it because there were people who were much more famous for their US title runs.

It's really a combination of everything. You don't have to have everything but you need at least a mix of some of it to be considered a great champ.
