I remember reading a thread about this and one theory was the comic book character thanos. Well, I was sitting in an abnormal psych class yesterday and we were discussing freud and what do I see come up? Thanatos. This is Freud's term for "death instinct." Not knowing Tom personally, but knowing that he's a psych professor, I got to think that would be either a strong influence, or some kind of subconscious freudian slip! Funny how being in a psych class can still bring up CotG! ;D

You are correct. According to Tom Thantos is derived from the word Thanatos.

Thanatos is also the Greek god of death, right? And Morpheus is the god of sleep, if I remember rightly. The Greek connection alone is enough to link it to Tom.

Morpheus is definately the Greek God of sleep.. .and also the Sandman in the Neil Gaiman series.
There's a Thanatos character in Marvel too, he was a Spidey 2099 villian.

Incidentally, has anyone else spotted the Master Race reference?
There was a Doctor Who episode called the Power of Kroll, and a recurring alien race called the Zygon.

A "Powerhouse" is a strong person, which was probably the inspiration for the name of the team of Massif and Earthquake.
"Reptillo" is a play on the word "reptile"
I'll let you guys know if I find any more.

It's an interesting topic, delving into the names. Interesting, of all the Gladiators, Spike is the only one with a regular name, isn't he?

Don't forget that "Wolf" is also the name of an animal..... OMG I don't know how we all missed that. Good find, Mike, "Lightning" is sometimes a nickname for someone who is fast. "Quick as lightning" they say. Lightening is a very agile, quick wrestler. Am I digging too deep here?
