For anyone following my fed, or who happens to stop by, there has been a big controversy over who deserves the 2007 Wrestler of the Year award. It even led to the main event at the year-end supercard, where Nick Bockwinkel faces The Sheik. These have been the two dominant singles wrestlers in my fed over the past two years.
The Sheik edged Bockwinkel in 2006 based mainly on the fact he had no losses by pinfall the entire year (19 matches). Both had impressive title reigns in 2006 as well.
So who is the NWF Wrestler of the Year – Bockwinkel or Sheik? While their SUPERBOWL match is a factor, it is still only one match in what will go down as a spectacular year for each. Here are some summary stats for each contender:
NICK BOCKWINKEL
• Overall record: 11-5-1 (11-5 in matches decided by pinfall or submission)
• Held the NWF Title for 243 days of 2007, which was part of an all-time record 504 day title reign spanning 2006-2007
• Defended his title successfully nine times against Crusher, Don Leo Jonathan, Rick Rude, Antonino Rocca, Mad Dog Vachon and Steve Williams
• Since losing the NWF title, has won tag belts with partner Ray Stevens
THE SHEIK
• Overall record: 15-2-1(12-1 in matches decided by pinfall or submission)
• Will end the year having held the North American Title for a total combined 322 days in 2007
• Defended his title successfully a combined thirteen times against Jimmy Snuka, Larry Zbyszko, Brad Armstrong, Ivan Koloff, Antonino Rocca, Magnificent Muraco, Ted DiBiase, Jim Duggan and Bob Armstrong
• Suffered first (and only) pinfall loss of his 44 match NWF career in March 2007
