Now that the Sonics have a new General Manager in Sam Presti, they're now intensifying their search for a new coach. The 3 names being talked about the most are:
Rick Carlisle- the NBA's Coach of the Year in 2002 who did a good job as head coach of the Detroit Pistons and Indiana Pacers. Carlisle also has ties tot the Sonics organization as he worked with Kevin Calabro doing Sonics broadcasts fro one season in between coaching stints. If Carlisle doesn't become the Sonics new coach he is expected to work as an analyst for ESPN next year.
Dwane Casey- the former head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves. Casey was an assistant coach for the Sonics from 1994-2005 and hiring him as the head coach could very well make it easier to retain free agent Rashard Lewis who calls Casey "a father figure." If Casey doesn't get the Seattle job, it is rumored that he might end up as an assistant with the Boston Celtics.
P.J. Carlesimo- the top assistant for the San Antonio Spurs. After working for the Spurs for the past 7 years, Presti is very familiar with Carlesimo. Carlesimo wasn't impressive at all in his former NBA head coaching positions at Portland (although he did take to the playoffs every year during his tenure) and Golden State. But after helping the Spurs win 2 NBA Championships (and possibly a 3rd this year), Carlesimo is now regarded by many as the top assistant in the NBA.
By far, those are the 3 names currently being mentioned the most. Some of the other names being mentioned (but nowhere near as strongly) include Lakers assistant coaches Jim Cleamons and Kurt Rambis, Bulls assistant coach Jim Boylan, and the Knicks' assistant coach Herb Williams.
