I noticed in Jim's polls that no black characters were listed. At the risk of shoving my heritage down people's throats, I'm curious if anyone else out there either reads or gets into black superheroes.

The original Cap America was black? That doesn't seem accurate (or likely, not to put too fine a point on it). Details?
Of the choices I used to read, I have to go with Spawn. However, of the choices not listed, I stand behind (Jim Valentino's) Shadowhawk.

See, already the post is educational.
I recommend that ANY comic fan read the TRUTH books. Not just because they reveal the first Cap to be Black, but because this story is so powerful it transcends comic writing.

Rings...
Just got ta' ask...
Did the story play on the thought that the government felt blacks were 'expendable' and that's why they were used for beta testing?
Sorry...I haven't read the book (hides head in shame.)

Yes. As was literally the case during the era of military sponsored medical testing (early 1900's- 1950's), Blacks were used to test out the "Super Soldier" serum created by the government. I wont say too much more because I think you owe it to yourselves to at least research the story.

The Isiah Bradley Cap was a really good story. It makes you think... and erases the whole image of squeeky clean one shot , " Super Soldier Serum worked just right for ol' Steve" . Like all experiments, it had some failures and some moderate successes.
That being said, I loved the Christoper Priest- written Black Panther. He really got to know the character, really made you care about what happened.
A lot of characters are cool, and it really doesn't matter (to me) what the color of their skin happens to be.
Luke Cage is becoming interesting in the New Avengers.
And the Black Panther could take Batman (any guy who has a contingency plan for when Galactus attacks could take down a guy in a batsuit.)

I always wanted to read the TRUTH titles, maybe I will pick them up in my next round of trade paperbacks. As for my favorite black superhero, Cage as Power Man was one of the first I was ever exposed too (as the first comic books I had contact with where the "public service anouncement" one shots they did for schools and one featured Power Man and Iron Fist), and Black Panther is Awesome. Storm has always been at the top of my list (and the fact that Hally played her in the movies didn't hurt either!). I always thought Bishop had a cool storyline. War Machine was black? Shows how much I was paying attention. My vote when I get home will go to Storm though.

There were alot of great black superheroes
My favorites was Storm
I tried to list the famous heroes in the polls and I didn't pay attention to the race. The Green Lantern wasn't a specific one but all of them in general

My vote goes to Black Lightning. The updated, modern version that had his own series in the mid-90s, as written by Tony Isabella. It was an intelligent, well-writtten book. Sadly, the character gets remembered either for his wicked afro and white mask of the 70s-ealry 80s, or the classic SNL sketch.
Other favorites are Shadowhawk and Jon Stewart/Green Lantern.

I have always been a huge fan of Bishop. He has long been one of my favorite super heroes period. Black, white, asian it doesn't matter. Bishop is up there with Batman on my list. His powers are just so dang cool. Someone shoots him and thinks they got the last laugh but they were oh so wrong. Not to mention his whole story is so cool. Going back in time to prevent your own future, possibly making it so that you don't exist. Pretty cool.
