Full-Time Fighter: Looking Back on 2007, UFC 79

What a year.
This has been (by far) the most exciting year of my life, yet all I can focus on are the negatives. At this time last year, I would be hard pressed to find anyone here that has ever heard of me or MMAJunkie.com, and now here we are, living the dream. I can say that because I feel that I am part of the team here.
Anyway, I want to start out by saying a heartfelt “thank you” to everyone that visits this website. I quit visiting the Sherdog forum completely, and I quit going to The Underground forum (unless a friend asks me to get on a particular thread), but I will always come back to MMAjunkie.com. You guys have backed me since Day One, and I will forever be grateful. Even with the people that don’t like me, I can appreciate some criticism. So my “thank you” goes to the Junkie (and I can’t forget Performify) and to everyone that visits this site and keeps the discussions professional. This site is good for the sport, and that is why I will always come here.
I also want to send a very personal “thank you” to everyone that donated to the Sam Vasquez fund. Unless you are a father, you will never know what that meant to his family.
Last but not least, I want to thank everyone that has helped me this year (and I apologize for missing anyone): my wife, Missy, and son, Marcus (always); my in-laws Rick, Kerry, Lindsey and Tori; my family Mike, Jean and especially Matt (my new strength and conditioning coach) and Danny (since Day One); Kyle and Jenny; Rex Holman; Marc Cofer (coming up quick); Mike Camp (my boy); Gary Marino; Red Schafer; Duke Roufus; the two Scotts at Duke’s; David Heath; Alan Belcher; and the crew that tells me what to do at MMAAgents.com, which is Ken Pavia (the captain of this ship), my boy GT, Nate, Brady and Julian.
And you know I can’t forget TapouT. Everything about them is for the fighters and the sport. They could drop me tomorrow and I will forever rep TapouT. Those are some of the most dedicated human beings I know.
A quick update on me. I am working (it seems like forever) on a new project that will be keeping me in Columbus. I love it here, but I will always go where the best training is. On that note, I have re-evaluated my approach (and then re-evaluated it again and again) and will be taking off until I believe that I am a new fighter. I got in this game 25 months ago and fought 19 times, but I never gave myself a chance to improve. Honesty, I thought I was the next world champion. I have been humbled and can admit when things need to be fixed, and that is what we are doing here. I am taking the time to fix everything — even the things that I always believed I was best at. The next time you see me in a cage, I will be the best version of me that I can present. And for the people that really care, my health will always come first, so relax.
So, how about my quick thoughts on the last UFC? Lyoto Machida is much, much better than I gave him credit for. Matt Hughes is one of the top three welterweights in the world, but Georges St. Pierre is the best fighter pound for pound that the world has ever seen. I have been a Chuck Liddell fan for awhile, but I will now be a Wanderlei Silva fan forever. Those two gave a such a fearless performance — one that has only been matched once (maybe) with Forrest Griffin vs. Stephan Bonnar at the “TUF” finale. I can’t believe either one of them is still standing.
What an event and what a year!
Happy holidays and bless all of you,
Sean Salmon
