Dan Henderson Optimistic About Contract Extension
Posted by MMA Junkie on October 15, 2007 at 10:03 am ET
Dan HendersonPRIDE Fighting Championships 185-pound champ Dan Henderson (22-6 MMA, 2-1 UFC) recently turned down the UFC’s offer for a contract extension but is hopeful a better deal will be offered by the organization, reports the Houston Chronicle‘s Steve Sievert in his “Brawl Sports” blog.
Henderson has one fight remaining on his current contract, which was acquired when the UFC’s owners purchased PRIDE earlier this year (though not all of the fighters’ contracts were transferable).
Last month at UFC 75, Henderson dropped a five-round unanimous decision to UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton Jackson. Henderson put his PRIDE 205-pound belt on the line, which has now been absorbed into a lone light heavyweight title owned by Jackson. (Henderson, though, still owns PRIDE’s 185-pound title.)
Henderson tells Sievert that he felt he won the fight and wants a rematch with Jackson.
Prior to that fight, UFC President Dana White offered Henderson a contract extension, but the fighter says he wasn’t happy with it and chose to take the fight under terms of his existing contract.
From Sievert’s MMA Notebook:
“He was telling me that, ‘We haven’t had guys leaving. We take care of the guys, that’s why they’re happy. We don’t want guys that are unhappy,’” Henderson said about initial negotiations with White. “I haven’t seen that.“
Regardless, Henderson says he’s optimistic a new deal will be reached.
Last week, White told reporters that he considers Henderson a top 185-pound contender who could soon earn a shot at the UFC’s middleweight championship. Henderson, though, has recently stated that he prefers to fight at 205 pounds.
