I am surpirsed that Overeem lost- he had some good momentum after his underdog victory of Igor. Also surprised that Aleksander lost- I was hoping he would win this to step out of Fedor's considerable shadow.
I am glad and unsurprised that Nog, Yoshida, Hunt and Cro Cop won. I think we may be able to see the third Cro Cop and Hunt match soon. Yoshida and Nog would be a great match also.

I'm not surprised Overeem lost. Werdum has impressed me so far. He looked a little tentative in this match, but with a little more experience, he could be a true contender within a couple years, if not sooner.
I was totally marking out for TK during the Hunt match, though. Too bad he couldn't quite pull it off.
What I wanna know is if the Barnett/Fedor match could happen in the second round. Somehow I don't know if Barnett will get any further. He could maybe beat Yoshida and Fujita, possibly Werdum, but the others I think would take him out. And they might put Yoshida and Fujita against each other to guarantee a home country boy in the semis.
I look for a Fedor/Nogueira final, with Fedor winning, if he's healthy.

I was really happy with the card, considering I really didn't expect so many fighters to show so much heart. (i had a bad feeling going in).
Tk looked great, but pretty much everyone is saying that. I was impressed by Josh victory over Alex.. it was almost comical seeing Alex gas out (or drop his poker face) at the end of round one.... He hide it real well.

I was totally suprised how good this card was. Though the Yoshida and Cro Cop wins were no suprise the other fights all looked like they could go either way. All the fights for the second roud look like show stealers (on paper at least). Im dying to see a Fedor/ Barnett or Hunt. Cant wait for the semi's.

You know what i'm really wondering...
If Cro Cop will choke again. Or simply put.. Maybe he isn't as great as everyone has made him out to be? I could see Yoshida getting lucky. I could see Hunt beating him again.. and Nog has already been down this path as has Fedor.
Who knows.. maybe he'll get Josh B. for round two.
By the way who besides me thinks Fedor won't be ready yet to return?

I hope Fedor is ready. It'd be such a waste if he wasnt. Even if he isnt though, Im sure we will see a worthy contender for the title. Cro Cop to me seems like he waivers when his confidence is low. On the flip side, he is a beast when he is confident. So who knows how he will do. Look how Barnett came back after talk of a possible retirement. I have feeling it will be Nog/Fedor IV but I am hoping Hunt will make it to the finals. Even if he doesnt win, you know it will be an awesome fight.

Fedor interview. Stolen from Tensai at sherdog (great poster) (he translated it) -- How do you feel about the OW GP 1st round? - I feel bad that Aleks lost, very disappointed. I just feel consolation from the fact that Zentsov won. I think everything else went as predicted.
-- Why do you think Aleks lost? - I think he was lacking something in the preparation. Also what I want to say is that Josh Barnett seemed to be rubbing something in his eyes and called for a break in the action. That stopped the fight andd there was a doctor stop but the results were fine. There was nothing wrong with the eye, so I don't understand why he did that.
-- After the fight he taunted you by pointing at you and saying "you're the only one I want to fight." - I think it's very good to do that kind of demonstration. Josh is a great fighter, a strong fighter, but he lost to Mirko twice so comparatively I think he's less than Mirko. Ofcourse I respect him as a fighter.
-- By winning about Aleks is Josh worthy to be your opponent? - It's not a matter of worthiness or not, but I beat Mirko. Considering he lost to Mirko, I think there is still a gap between us. But I am ready to fight anyone, so I don't underestimate anyone.
-- After the GP Sakakibara said "if Fedor could make it to second round then I hope Fujita or Yoshida wants to step up" but what do you think about both fighters? - I think Fujita is a great fighter. But in terms of the Thompson fight I think it took him a while to finish. I think Fujita could've ended the fight earlier. Yoshida, well this matchmaking was lucky for him.
-- You fought Fujita before, do you feel he grew since then? - I wouldn't know until I actually face him in the ring, but my impression from watching him is that he didn't get that strong. In fact I think he looked like he got weaker since I faced him.
-- About an year ago you said you wanted to fight the Olympic judo gold medalist Yoshida, do you still feel that way? - I still want to fight him, a wonderful athlete who wins a medal in the olympics. Yoshida thinks about how to fight with his techniques as the fight goes on, so a match between him is very intriguing to me.
-- TK who has fought you before retired with the fight yesterday. What do you think about his fight? - What I thought was strange watching TK fight was that he didn't go with his strongest points. Knowing that Hunt's speciality is striking, TK went with the striking as well. I felt that it was very strange of him to withold his own strength against Hunt and lose. I wonder why he went with that method? Why not use your strength to your advantage? I think he could've fought more advantageously against Hunt.
-- Do you have any messages for TK? - Rather than words towards his retirement, the image of his fight against Hunt is on my mind. TK, I believe that in a match you have to go forward with your strengths. I don't think that there is a necessity to opt for your weaker points. Even when he got in a mount, why didn't he go for a submission? I feel it's strange.
-- Do you feel any special feelings for a fighter that you've fought retiring? - No. When an athlete decides on his own to end his career then that's normal. I never felt a special emotion towards a fighter that is retiring.
-- What do you think about Hunt, who some are calling the closest to defeat Fedor? - I think he's a very good fighter but I feel doubtful whether he can win the 2nd round fight. I think there's a chance he might lose.
-- Who do you think will be the most formidable foe from the first round if you can compete in the 2nd? - I think everyone won as predicted, but no one had shown any new movement or shown considerable growth. Therefore I don't think there is a big foe for me. Although Nogueira did win too, but he fought me twice and lost so with that in mind I don't think there is a significant foe. If after facing me he acquired some new skills then he might've been a wonderful opponent but...from seeing the 1st round I didn't think he's shown any considerable growth.
-- How is your right hand? - I can't say anything in detail until I show it to the doctors. Right now the plate is still inside.
-- Do you want to compete in the 2nd round? - Very much. If my hand is healed then I will definitely return to the ring on July.
