This is something I've been wanting to do for a long time, and I finally got a little time freed up to try. What I am doing is re-drawing and redesigning the entire Revolution 2098 set. It's always bothered me that this stellar set, with several characters that could have been major players for years after, was hindered a little by unimaginative artwork. Don't get me wrong, I think Mike Gustovich is a very competent artist, but his concepts of these key COTG characters didn't have the passion and depth that they should have had. And, as a lot of people have pointed out, there wasn't a lot of variation from the old "linebacker" pose. They looked like they were posing for football trading card pictures from the 60s.
Anyway, the first three rough sketches:
Occult Overlord- With a name like that I imagined him being a little darker and more intimidating. The character as designed originally does not inspire much fear...or much of anything really. He's just kind of there. I went with all of the traditional "occult boogeyman" trappings and a new mask inspired by a number of familiar sources.
Heracles of Crete-Gustovich really just brought the Marvel comics version of Hercules to the GWF with his drawing. That's natural since Gustovich had worked extensively on the Averngers comic during the period when Hercules was a featured character. I went with the more historical description of the Norse demi-god, complete with animal skin/fur and fur loincloth over a pair of breeches. I also gave him an expression that, I think, better expresses the character.
Marcel DeSade- Here's one of the ones I was most disappointed in originally. After years behind the mask, Marcel takes it off and just looks like a normal dude. He appears serene and somewhat heroic in the Gustovich drawing. I went with something a little more fitting of a grizzled veteran who's been around and seen a lot.
Coming up, I'm in the process of re-doing Grunge to look less like an 80s metal guy, and a Killing Machine that isn't a direct copy of DC comic's "Doomsday" character as he originally appeared (which is the other one that really, really bothered me).
