My 11-year-old niece (my wife's brother's daughter) has been hospitalized for a pretty serious staph infection in her right hand and left foot. She was just flown to the University of Iowa medical center tonight for treatment and is in a lot of pain. They're going to do something for her tonight, so hopefully it will start to help out.
Any good vibes are appreciated. Thanks.

There's nothing worse than seeing something happen to a kid. Here's hoping she gets better this weekend.

Thanks, Trav. I just got an update from my mother-in-law. She was in surgery from 2-4 am to drain the fluid, and they confirmed that it is indeed a staph infection. The doctor said it's unusual to see this level of infection without an obvious puncture wound, which they can't find. They may have to repeat the procedure in a couple days if the fluid build-up comes back, but for now she's on antibiotics and a morphine drip, so at least she's sleeping.
The doctor does seem to think that progress has been made, though, so that's good.

Yeah, but she's unfortunately not out of the woods yet. The overnight surgery was pretty much so that her hand could be saved. Another day and that might not have been possible.

Well, the latest is somewhat better. They went in again Saturday for a little more surgical work, but today her dad actually got her down to the arcade to play a Wii game or two, so her spirits are a bit better. Still running a fever and is having a mild allergic reaction to one of the antibiotics she's on, but they're hoping by Tuesday she'll be headed home.
Sports teams should definitely be concerned about this. She's in a basketball league which could be where she got it. They're still investigating.

Well, now the doctors think the infection has moved to her hip. She's scheduled for an MRI today, and if it's in the bone and not just the muscle, it means more surgery.
She's pretty tired of getting poked at by now, so we're just hopeful it's over with soon and they can all get back home.

Well, just got a better update via e-mail from my mother-in-law:
"Just returned from IA City. BIG improvement from yesterday. She couldn't move her legs without morphine yesterday. They think the widespread pain and swelling is reactive arthritis. Today they will do EKG and Heart Echo to rule out rheumatic fever. Also will have Lyme and TB testing. She was sitting up, watching a movie and ate some lunch. She is much more alert and VERY afraid of any medical personnel who walk through the door. She is also in isolation so, we wear protective clothing etc. They are still waiting on the MRSA test and whatever kind of bacteria is growing in that R hip. PT is getting her up and around some...everything considered, she is on her way back to us."
Improvement, but still in the woods.

My wife and I will include her in our prayers Mark. I can't imagine how scary it must be for a kid that young to have to go through all of that kind of stuff. Here's hoping she is fully recovered soon.

Mostly good news now, finally. The infection is pretty well licked, although she has to have antibiotics for another six weeks. They have one more surgery for her to have the antibiotics set up somehow through a port in her chest so she gets them consistently. That's on Friday. After that, she should be cleared to go home.
About time.
Thanks to everybody for thoughts, prayers, whatever you had to offer. It means a lot to me and I'm sure to her family, and I know it helped.
