We clearly have different likes when it comes to websites, I guess.

- To me it doesn't look 'dated', it looks much updated, but kept simple also. I think many sites that really want to look futuristic, hip, or at least 'up to date' also tend be too 'busy' for my tastes, unfortunately.

- Colors seem fine. Primarily bright red and blue, tinged with white. I'm glad its not splattered with a half dozen colors or more which rarely works for me. That usually results in hard to see links or buttons, too.

- I don't quite get the 'awkward side nav' comment really. Seems simplistic and functional to me.
