OpenOffice/Excel

Putting it here because I have nowhere else to put it...

Can anyone out there tell me what differences, functionally speaking, there are between OpenOffice and Excel? My wife and I have both either had to pass, or been passed up on jobs due to lack of familiarity with Excel (we both learned it in High School, but that's been nearly a decade ago) and it would clearly come in handy.

So...for those who have used both....would downloading OpenOffice and familiarizing ourselves with it help with the Excel issue?

I see no difference and doubt I will give up using excel after using it for soooo long.
