Jordan finally succumbed in his fight with cardiac amyloidosis, which he was diagnosed with last year. According to his official blog, he passed away yesterday (Sunday, 9/16/2007) at 2:45 PM.
Jordan is most famous for The Wheel of Time series, and is also know for his Conan work.
Before getting into writing, he served two tours of duty for the US Army in Vietnam and also attended the Citadel. His military service and writing style made him a hero to many, even before his valiant fight with amyloidosis.
The twelfth and final book in the Wheel of Time series was originally scheduled for an early 2009 release, and no announcement has yet been made on its status (or if it will be published posthumously). It is known that Jordan went over the details of how he wanted to finish the book with members of his family to ensure that it could be completed 'if the worst happened.'

wow...the last report said he was doing better...even did one of his own entries into the blog which caused some uproar.
There is only one series in which i own every book in hardcover and it is the Wheel of Time...the greatest story ever written...
Sad day in the world of fantasy.
Godspeed, James Rigney Jr. Rest in Piece.

It seems that we somehow deserve this for putting up with the really crappy books.
And friedn and I always joked about him getting into a car crash and leaving the plot hanging.
