Anyone here into poetry?
I'm a huge Charles Bukowski fan, along with some classics, Beat Generation poets, and post-modern poets. I also love Japanese forms, which is my biggest hobby,

I don't know that I have any particular poets I like over any others, but I've always been a Langston Hughes fan. Rilke, too. So the classics for me, I guess. Just read some stuff by Eleanor Lerman in The Nation magazine which was quite good, so I can see why she won their 2006 award.
Been to a couple poetry slams. Never participated, though, even though I have written some poetry a long time ago. People told me it was good. Who knows if they were being honest?

I've always liked Claude McKay. Other poets are cool too, but I only like certain poems.

William Blake...The One True and Only Poet! Everything else is garbage. Blake is the man and the cloest we'll get to a supreme being on Earth! Bow down before...
Okay maybe I'm going a little far. He's just my favorite poet and I like how he had an outcast view of religion in a time when people we're drawing blood over whether Jesus was left handed.
Take care,
Jay

Charles Bukowski, Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Phillip Levine, Ezra Pound, William Carlos Williams, Gary Snyder, Walt Whitman, and Langston Hughes are good poets to check out.

Rita Dove would be another one I'd add to the list. Never been much of a Maya Angelou fan, for whatever reason, but folks seem to dig her.

Maya Angelou is sort of like the McDonalds of modern poetry. Everyone pretty much knows about it, and it's easy to get to, and it's fine for what it is....but you'd really rather have a nice steak than a McChicken sandwich. Just my take.
Lots of great stuff mentioned here. I'll add that Edgar Allan Poe has some wonderful, dark poetry that just comes to life when you read it. Not for everyone, but I like it.
I've written lots and lots of poetry over the years. Perhaps someday I'll share some with the board...I don't know if it's any good, but it means a lot to me.
