Ok...I've never really been into comic books...but I've always loved super heroes. If you could only read 5 comics ever...which characters comic books would they be? Please keep it realistic and current and don't say..Superman Volume #1- whatever...please make it be current.

Let's see...
*X-Men/GALACTUS *The Black guy with the Hawk and the red and white outfit. *Brigade *Spider Man *Green Lantern
That's really hard to widdle it down to just 5. Batman should be in there too...
GALACTUS is probably my favorite.

5. Deadpool run 97- 02 or 03- funny (hilarious, actually) stuff, great writing How can you hate a charater that knows he is in a comic book? 4. Captain America Vol 1 448- 454 Mark Waid Ron Graney- Great team good story arc, simple and effective artwork. Grim and Gritty Cap stories 3. Black Panther- Christopher Priest run- very well written book, kind of tapered off in the end 2. Current Ultimates run- My favorite current book. 1. Walt Simonson Thor run- around vol 1 335- 380. What a prolific work this was. Death of Odin, introduction of Beta Ray Bill, Thor turned into a Frog, KURSE (!!) Death of thor. Best issue was 387, a splash page affair in which Thor fought and died fighting Jormungandr. Awweome, Awesome stuff.

this is next to impossible, but I'll give it a go: 1) Mid -80s Iron Man - the best run, IMO, is from when Tony got off the sauce, through armor wars (I think that would be about issues 190-230 or so).. Iron Man centered on the corporate aspect of the character is when its at its best IMO, and the artist at the time really nails the suit. 2) Fables - This is a current book, any and all stories will do. If you haven't heard of it, its basically all the fairy tale characters you can think off (The Big Bad Wolf, Snow White, Jack (representing all Jacks), Prince Charming (ditto), and Pinocchio are some of the main character) living in secret in NY while the ADVERSARY conquers Fable. Don't let the subkect matter fool you, its a VERY adult comic, with fantastic characterization, complex stories, and lots of fun. For this one STAY AWAY from spoilers, who the Adversary is comes out around issue 50, and is a BIG suprise 3) Walt Simonson Thor - This is when they focused on the Asgard stuff, which is great, IMO... it also has some really bizarre stuff like the Frog of Thunder, and good Beta Ray Bill stuff. IF Asgard doesn't appeal, the Dan Jurgen recent Thor is also very good... Odin dies, Thor takes over, and move Asgard to the sky above NY, and starts , well, basically doing miracles with the Odin force... VERY interesting stuff. 4) Elfquest - IMO, the best non-mainstream ever! Fantastic art, and a great story. I'd go with the original story (orginally out in magazine sized self-published, then re-printed under Marvels Epic imprint in the early 80s.. there are now manga sized trades by DC, who not has the rights) up through Seige of Blue Mountain. 5) New Warriors - This was a great book riff on the tradition superhero coming of age.. I'd talking the original mind you, not the recent garbage. I'd say from the beginning of the first series (by Fabian Nicenza) through about issue 50 (up through the Time and Time again story), along with the Nova and Night Thrasher solo books are definately among Marvels best of the late 80s, early 90s.

Wildfire, good call on the Jurgens Run for Thor- I particularly liked how he created Dessak, a god killer whom resembled a certian other character he created to kill a certian other Super character from Marvel's Distinguished Competitor.

Are the Fable comics still available starting at #1? If not, should I try to get them off of Ebay? What type of price should I pay?

Are the Fable comics still available starting at #1? If not, should I try to get them off of Ebay? What type of price should I pay? I would recommend getting the trades.. its a little cheaper and they're easy to find, either at your favorite on line comic dealer, or amazon. Fables has the double whammy of being popular and being a small print run, so the single comics for the first couple issue could be expensive (I'd guess the $10-$15 range)... I wouldn't think they're particularly ran though, its only about 5 yrs old. For your convience, here's a link to the Amazon llsting for the 1st trade: www.amazon.com/Fables-Vol-1-Legends-Exile/dp/1563899426/sr=1-2/qid=1165548357/ref=pd_bbs_2/002-2980050-6520023?ie=UTF8&s=books
