Hi all,
This'll probably make me sound really green, but I always thought Hogan created the idea of 'hulking-up.' However, I was watching the History of the WWE Title and saw both Backlund and Bruno 'hulk-up' in their matches. I've also read about wrestlers using it back when Hogan was Sterling Golden.
I was just wondering of anyone knew of the first wrestler who actually used the adrenaline rush. It'd be interesting to run a LOW bootleg match with Hogan against the 'Originator.'
Thanks and take care,
Jay

Hulking Up in some form is probably as old as worked wrestling itself.
Maybe Jim Londos didn't start shaking, no-selling, bugging his eyes out, and waving his finger in the opponent's face, but I'm sure he knew how to make a comeback.
Guys who did the more modern Hulk-Up in the mid-'70s or earlier:
Bruno Sammartino Dusty Rhodes Jerry Lawler Any Indian babyface Ivan Putski Dick the Bruiser Blackjack Mulligan (VERY likely Hogan lifted much of his act from him)

Bruno was pretty famous for comebacks, but he didn't play to the crowd nearly as much...
I'd probably say Lawler putting his strap down might be the precedent for makeing a DRAMATIC comeback, where the crowd can get all excited because they know its coming.

I always thought Hogan stole it from the famous Lawler no sell/strap down sequence. Lawler was infleunced by Jackie Fargo who did something similar to hulking up but I couldnt tell you who Fargo lifted it from.

According to Jim Cornette in his Wrestling Gold DVDs, Hogan was influenced by Lawler, who in turn was influenced by Jackie Fargo. Where did Jackie Fargo get the idea of the "hulk up" from? Popeye the Sailor Man.
