Ok, reading some of these Classics threads got me to remembering all the good times I've had watching feds like the NWA, WCCW, AWA, WCW, UWF, ECW and of course the WWF.
I can't list them all, but here's a couple for starters...
Greatest Turn Ever!! For me, it can only be when Barry Windham turned on Lex Luger during a tag match against Arn and Tully. Barry Windham?! Ultimate babyface Barry Windham?!?!
Luger got sneak-attacked before the match, so Barry had to fight by himself. JJ Dillon was yelling up at Barry "I told ya he wouldn't be there for you! I told ya he wouldn't be there!" Devious!! And Barry fell for it...
When Luger was finally able to crawl (classic!) down to ringside to Barry's corner, Barry was so frustrated with having to fight by himself that he turned to Luger in disgust and slapped him on the shoulder, legally tagging him in. But Luger was a sad, crumpled mess in the corner. That's when Barry snapped and suplexed Luger into the ring to what I consider the single, greatest "call" in professional wrestling history... Jim Ross' "Barry, NOOOO!!"
My friends and I still use that call to this day, if something goes wrong or something unexpected happens. Accidently step on a friend's foot, or even spill some milk? You just might hear a "Barry, NOOO!"
The Horsemen finished Luger off, and Barry walked away with JJ Dillon and threw up the 4 fingers Horsemen symbol. What?! Barry a Horseman?!
And what elevated the Barry turn from just being cool to being the greatest ever... Dusty Rhodes! It was at a time when Dusty had just gotten suspended (I think it was because he beat on Tully Blanchard with a cane or baseball bat for assaulting a crippled Magnum T.A., but I may be wrong), but Dusty pulled a Star Warrior/Avenging Warrior and started stalking the bad guy, mainly the 4 Horseman, as the Midnight Rider. He had a mask, long trench coat, and a freakin' rope noose! And if anyone could remove the mask and prove that it was Dusty, Rhodes would be suspended for good.
Anyways, he followed Barry into the bad guys locker room to ask him why he turned on Luger, totally oblivious to the the bad guys like Arn (my favorite), Flair, the Midnight Express, you name it -- were slowly circling him. And when Barry turned away from him, Dusty/Rider shouted "Don't you turn your back on me!!" and reached for him... and that's when all hell broke loose!
The Midnight Rider was jumped by ever bad guy in the business and got pummeled. JJ Dillon was yelling "Grab his mask! Get his mask!!" and they did! Under the mask, Dusty's blonde hair could be seen. As a little kid (and a HUGE Dusty mark) watching this, I was like "Oh, CRAP!! He's screwed!"
But that's when the reinforcements arrived. Busting through the door to the bad guys' locker room were the good guys. Big brawl heaven... I can't remember all of them well anymore (*sigh* my old age must be catching up with me...), but I do remember Nikita Koloff for sure and maybe Dr Death Steve Williams, diving through the bad guys just as they were forcing Dusty's face to the camera for all to see. One of the good guys ripped off his shirt and immediatly threw it over Dusty's face to keep his "secret" identity safe, and quickly ushered him out of the room.
ahhhh, memories.... they just don't make turns like that anymore....
I know I said I had more to list but I dont want you to get too sick of this too soon.
I'll definately post more later, but hit me with your greatest wrestling memories. I'd love to read/hear them!
