It sounds like the Mariners are about to acquire Erik Bedard from the Orioles. Adam Jones, the Mariners top prospect and the main player in the package supposedly going from Seattle to Baltimore, has reportedly been instructed to stop playing Winter ball in Venezuela and report to the Orioles to take a physical. This is what Jones said to a reporter in Venezuela: "(Bavasi) called me yesterday and told me the news," Jones said. "I've got to go to Baltimore tomorrow morning and handle things there. I'm the centerpiece of the deal on the Mariners' side. It's an honor to get traded for such a highly talented pitcher as Bedard is." seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/mariners/2004148540_webmarijonesbedard27.htmlI'm really hoping that one of the other players the Mariners will probably also have to send to the Orioles isn't Brandon Morrow. Before moving to Las Vegas 9 years ago, I lived my entire life in the Seattle area and regularly went to about 15-20 Mariners games each year and I still go to at least one Mariners home game each year at Safeco Field whenever I go to Seattle in the summer to visit my parents. If the Ms do indeed get Bedard, you've got to like the top of their rotation with Bedard and Felix Hernandez. But I still think on paper the Angels have the better team in the AL West.

Thankfully it doesn't sound like Brandon Morrow is going to the Orioles in a trade for Bedard.
According to the Mariners' website that I just read, the trade is supposedly the Mariners sending Adam Jones, George Sherrill, and Chris Tillman to the Orioles for Erik Bedard and one other player.
IF that's what the trade turns out to be, I hate to give up Jones and Sherrill but top of the order pitchers in their prime such as Bedard are really hard to acquire. IF this trade happens the Mariners rotation will be:
1. Erik Bedard (a true #1 pitcher based on last year's performance) 2. Felix Herandez (absolutley one of the best young pitchers in baseball) 3. Miguel Batista (pitches great at Safeco and won 16 games last season) 4. Carlos Silva (a good #4 pitcher but the Mariners way overpaid for him as a free agent IMO) 5. Jarrod Washburn
This leaves Brandon Morrow as a long reliever who can be inserted into the rotation in the event of an injury.
That's a good rotation but I still honestly think the Angels are the tougher team, especially on paper.

It looks like this trade is being stalled by Orioles' owner Peter Angelos. No surprise there. So much for that "promised autonomy" that Orioles President Andy MacPhail was promised upon being hired last summer.

Well, mlbtraderumors.com is suggesting that if/when Bedard is dealt, we may see some movement on the Santana front as well.
Peter Angelos is the main reason why I never got behind the Orioles, even though I live only a few blocks away from Camden Yards.

I've been an O's fan for a long while and it has been tough these last eleven seasons. This once proud competitive organization is a laughingstock with Angelos as head clown.
Bedard has shown dominant stuff at times, he set a club record for Ks this season and didn't even pitch in the last month. Not bad considering the great pitchers of the past.
There are some knocks on him, there were several times where he asked to be removed from games and his locker room demeanor varies from frosty to jerky. He asking for about 8 million a year yet hasn't ever pitched a full season in the majors. He won't resign here after his contract is up so they look to deal. The Orioles have many holes and need some young talent. They lack power, a closer, SS, and a CF.
Another battle between us and the D-Rays for the cellar. Boy, can't wait for baseball.

Well, the O's sound like they're making a last ditch effort to re-sign him. Besides that, Adam Jones supposedly has a degenerative hip... www.mlbtraderumors.com -- fantastic site for this kind of stuff.

Besides that, Adam Jones supposedly has a degenerative hip... www.mlbtraderumors.com -- fantastic site for this kind of stuff. The author, MLB's Jim Street, of that link said that hip rumor was "unsubstantiated." I remember in late 1999 when the Orioles backed out of a deal to sign free agent Aaron Sele by also citing health concerns and Sele went on to win over 30 games the next two seasons for the Mariners.

Yeah. That rumor was started by local sports clown, Stan "The Fan" Charles. An idiot if there ever was one. So I consider the source on that.
I've checked the rumor board and it does show that there are other teams now in the race as the Santana deal is finalized. They have made some new attempts to now resign him long term. I just don't think with Angelos' history that he will want to shell out the money he is asking for. But at this rate who knows.
Bedard does have dominant stuff on occassion but you just wonder if he has the heart to truly be a #1 and deserve all that scratch.

Anticipating him as a possible replacement for Adam Jones if the Bedard deal indeed goes through, the Mariners today signed free agent Brad Wilkerson.
If Jones goes to Baltimore for Bedard, Wilkerson takes his place. If Jones stays with the Mariners, then Wilkerson is a good OF/1B with power in his bat to have coming off the bench.

It sounds like this trade is finally going to be announced on either Wednesday or Thursday.

I'll say by Friday. This has been going on for way too long.
Overall I think my O's make out in the deal.

Well this trade finally got completed today and I honestly think it's a move that makes sense for both teams.
The rebuilding Orioles get 5 players (highlighted by Adam Jones who could become the next Torii Hunter) for Bedard in addition to the 5 players they got from Houston in the Tejada trade. Plus they might get 4 players from the Cubs for Brian Roberts- all that quantitiy of players could really help their rebuilding effort.
And this trade also makes sense for the Mariners who had a winning record last season but needed some help in their rotation before they could even consider challenging the Angels for the AL West. And now the Ms just acquired a top of the rotation pitcher who is still in his prime.

I'll be interested to see how the Mariners do this season. Bedard is a huge gain, but Bedard-Felix Hernandez is still not as imposing of a 1-2 punch as many other tandems in the major leagues right now. That said, the Mariners also did very well until late last season, so one would presume that if the Mariners played exactly the way they did last year, and Bedard netted them five additional wins, they might make the playoffs.
If not, then this was a very costly trade to the Mariners.

From the O's perspective I really like this trade. Jones could be an all-star and Sherrill can close. The three pitchers would be a killer basketball frontline but they have some pedigree as well.
Bedard has fantastic stuff. His attitude is what I've always questioned. Maybe being closer to home and in Seattle will keep him happy. From the M's it does make them better and a shot to catch the Angels.
