Only tards believe in heaven in the first place But its about the response I'd expect from a Bears fan. Duh Bears. I said I'm from Bear Country. Never said I was a Bears fan. While I don't cheer against them I don't lose any sleep overanything they do. Regardless of that, how many Super Bowls the Viqueens won anyway? Silly Havoc, don't you know it doesn't matter whether you win the Super Bowl or not. All that matters is if you pile up a bunch of records in the regular season. The 98 Vikings were the greatest team ever, until this year that is...

All this talk has me reminiscing over the greatest baseball team of all time..... The 2001 Seattle Mariners. Wow, they were great. (bet you thought I was gonna say Kevin Nash. If he played baseball, though, he would've by himelf, been the greatest team ever)

I think the 2001 Seattle Mariners are a good analogy for this discussion. They won 116 regular season games but lost in the second round of the playoffs to the Yankees who went on to lose in the World Series to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
So, although the Mariners received a banner from Major League Baseball that hangs in Safeco Field and that recognizes their historic regular season accomplishment, who really had the better year in 2001? The Diamondbacks.

Baseball's a little bit different as you have 162 games to evaluate team quality rather than 16. With 16 games all spread apart, it doesn't take much to skewer the standings.
I mean, does anyone *seriously* think the '06 Cardinals or the '87 Twins were the best teams in baseball that year? In 2001's case, the DBacks were built perfectly for a short series while the Mariners were not: Arizona had a pitching staff comprised of the two best pitchers in baseball and a bunch of dross, which in a short series is better than having 4 decent-good starters like the M's had.

The Patriots have been very impressive. But the record of best ever won't be complete until a Super Bowl victory.

It's silly to assume the best teams win every year. Hello, Cardinals?Let's not be campers, now/.

While I'm totally psyched about the 16-0, and especially Brady knocking Peyton Manning off the TD record, I agree that you can't even think about calling this team the best ever if they don't win the Super Bowl. Once they do, we can discuss

Havoc, Where on earth did you get that picture. You know what, I changed my mind... I don't want to to know Seriously, no one can doubt the accomplishments of the New England Patriots. They are an awesome team. However, Havoc's right (not about the last picture - that was just wrong). If the Patriots lose in the playoffs, they will not be the greatest team ever. They will be the greatest team that didn't win the superbowl. On that note, I predict that the Patriots win the superbowl in blowout fashion this year, to become the greatest NFL team of all time.

I am going to fight you for this. And when the Titans roll over the Chargers, and go into Foxboro.... They're gonna get their ass handed to them. Maybe we can soften them up for the Colts or Jags though.

This label must wait until AFTER they win the Super Bowl. If they fail at this task then 16-0 really means nothing in the long run. Obviously what they have accomplished is amazing, but how embarrassing would it be for them to get knocked off in the playoffs after this legendary run. So until they make it 19-0, they really haven't reached their goals and this label as the "Best Team Ever" is a bit premature.

I wouldn't say embrassing but this ends any discussion of the best team ever. It's not like they got their lunch handed to them.

I have a further question regarding this version of the New England Patriots (2007-2008).
Do you think that instead of the Best Team Ever that this incarnation of the Patriots has harmed the legacy of the team of this decade? The aura that preceded this team as being so deadly in the playoffs and always pulling out wins has arguably been somewhat tarnished with this crushing defeat. Despite the records and undefeated record, they were defeated in the last game of the year by a Wild Card team with arguably little star power (The Giants are a whole other debate that I would prefer staying away from at this point).
My concern is whether the aura of Belichik (sp?), Brady, and the Patriots as an organization is lessened by this defeat. Previously, Brady was undefeated in Super Bowls and was being compared to Montana in the pantheon of great postseason performers. Similarly, Belichik was being compared to the venerable Vince Lombardi due to his postseason successes. Are these comparisons now squashed by the defeat to a team they were favored to crush by two touchdowns?

great questions Hegemony.. The Patriots story is left unwritten.. They are the team of this decade without question unless the Giants win the next two..
The pats still have a lot of gas in the tank so I think they can get one more before Brady retires.
