Great signing for the Cubs.
Since the Cubs also signed Mark DeRosa (which I thought was another solid move), it sounds like the Cubs plan to keep Soriano in the outfield.

They plan to use him in center field. They've also reportedly got a bid in on JD Drew still and are also looking at Julio Lugo. Personally, I'd love to see them sign Lugo and trade Izturis for a bag of used balls. Signing Drew and trading Jones for a bag of used balls would work, too.

Peter Gammons over at ESPN today reported that with the signing of Alfonso Soriaono the Cubs are no longer going to pursue Julio Lugo despite the fact that Piniella likes Lugo from their days together in Tampa Bay.
According to Gammons, the Cubs are instead now focusing their efforts on signing two more starting pitchers and 2 more left handed batters (JD Drew bats left- but Lugo bats right).
Gammons also praised the Cubs moves and said they are making themselves instant contenders for next season.

I read that the Chicago sun Times is reporting that the Cubs are trying to sign Gil Meche to fill one of their holes in the rotation. Meche used to play for Piniella back when they were both in Seattle.

Red Sox Nation wants both of them too.

Here I come back from the dead ... oh holy crap ...
Anyway, pitchers and catchers reported yesterday, so I figured it was time to exercise my powers of thread necromancy on this bad boy. Notes from Mesa:
* Kerry Wood, who was healthy and trim coming into camp, hurt himself falling out a hot tub and will miss up to a week of spring training. Yeah, I'm serious. Can't make this up, people.
* In brighter news, Mark Prior and Wade Miller both threw off of a mound today with the other pitchers, and are said to be looking good. Their health would be HUGE for our team. Absolutely huge.
* Carlos Zambrano has a five-year offer on the table from the Cubs that is said to be in the "Zito range" as far as dollars per year. I'm hoping that Jim either gets this done soon or ships him off to the Yankees straight up for A-Rod. Either one is fine by me.
* Alfonso Soriano is already in camp. That makes me happy.
* They're painting Under Armour logos on the doors in the outfield at Wrigley. This will make me mad in a few years if we haven't successfully used all of this dirty money to buy a World Series.

Great; you jinxed them. There goes a healthy season this year You scared me half to death! I immediately jumped onto Cubs.com to find out if someone's arm fell off or something. ;D Apparently Woody looked good, and Mark didn't. Hopefully it's just something mental in his head about actually pitching and not another physical problem they're hiding from us. Time will tell.

I don't think it's really ever physical with Prior, but more mental. I think Prior, well, actually and quite frankly, is a wimp. A big time wimp. He's a whiner, for sure. Isn't he the one who cried until Steve Stone was replaced in the booth.
Cubs might win 80 this year.

I don't think it's really ever physical with Prior, but more mental. I think Prior, well, actually and quite frankly, is a wimp. A big time wimp. Right. Because it wasn't physical when he got speared by Marcus Giles. And then they let him continue to pitch. Or when he got hit on the elbow by a line drive. And then they let him continue to pitch.Mark's problems definitely seem to be mental now, but I honestly can't blame him for being over-cautious. Dusty tried to destroy his arm by having him pitch time and again when he had no business pitching. To call the man a wimp I think is a bit excessive; If I had the opportunity to make millions of dollars with an arm that someone tried to ruin, I'd be cautious about pitching through any sort of discomfort, too. He's a whiner, for sure. Isn't he the one who cried until Steve Stone was replaced in the booth. The complainers on that team were Kent Mercker, Todd Walker, and Moises Alou. I've never heard anyone suggest that Prior had any part in that nonsense. If you're going to bash someone, at least bash the man for something he's done. Cubs might win 80 this year. The Cubs will win 80 this year with their eyes closed. They've got six legitimate starting pitchers on the staff (Zambrano, Lilly, Hill, Marquis, Prior, and Miller) and at least four young guys with ML experience who can fill in in a pinch, so the rotation's in much better shape than years past. This is easily the best lineup they've fielded since '04, with very few holes from top to bottom and three guys (Soriano, Lee, Ramirez) who are legitimate 30 HR 100 RBI threats. And so far, Lou Piniella is looking to be the polar opposite of Dusty Baker - he's going to hold his players accountable, he's stressing fundamentals, and he's already spoken out about cutting down on walks allowed and bringing up OBP. Hating on the Cubs is one thing, but being blinded by that hatred into saying stupid things is another thing entirely. The Cubs are a good team this year. Breaking even on the season would be a disappointment with the talent they have, and I think a high 80's/low 90's team for them is very realistic. Yeah, there's the typical blind optimism that every Cubs fan feels in spring at play here. Nevertheless, I don't see how you can look at this team objectively and suggest that they'd be lucky to be a .500 team. The Trib bought a really good team this year. EDIT: Because Mark Prior != Moises Alou

The Cubs fans will have their eyes closed when the Cubs finsish 79-83. 2. How can anyone suggest they'll be lucky to be .500? They're the Cubs, that's how.

I am a White Sox fan. You can be optimistic all you want but to act offended that anyone could think your beloved Cubbies would finish anywhere but .500 is ridulous. History has showed that things tend to fall apart no matter what happens. "Oh no, he dropped the ball." Nevermind, don't want to get back onto Santo.

And there is a reason why you could hear a pin drop when the Pale-Hos won the World Series 2 years ago......NO ONE CARED.
However, WHEN the Cubs win there will be mass hysteria and it could very well lead to the end of exsistence. Armageddon rocks!!

That explains a lot. You can be optimistic all you want but to act offended that anyone could think your beloved Cubbies would finish anywhere but .500 is ridulous. First off, I wasn't offended, but rather a bit mystified. Secondly, the statement that I took exception to was that they might win 80 games. 80 wins would be an extremely disappointing season with the team that the Cubs have put together, and the suggestion that an 80 win season is near their cap is just beyond me. It's a good team, and I think that the only way you think this team finishes sub-.500 is if you've got the blinders on. And there is a reason why you could hear a pin drop when the Pale-Hos won the World Series 2 years ago......NO ONE CARED. However, WHEN the Cubs win there will be mass hysteria and it could very well lead to the end of exsistence. Armageddon rocks!! QFT. I might be watching from the rooftop seats in the Pearly Gates when it happens, but it'll be the biggest thing in sports history, period.

However, WHEN the Cubs win there will be mass hysteria and it could very well lead to the end of exsistence. Armageddon rocks!! IF the Cubs win. I always love when Cubs fans try to diminish a World Series Championship. Give me a call when they win, oh nevermind, we'll all be dead by then anyway.
