The thing that I both love and hate about the metal genre of music is it's immense size. Heavy metal has become extremely populated with so many different genres and subgenres that I'll never be able to fully explore them all. I'm constantly finding new music that I enjoy. And at the same time I find myself constantly trying to "catch up".
I've been a metalhead since I first heard "Ride the Lightning" back when I was a frosh in High School. Theres so much out there to listen to that rather then moving on to a different genre of music when I get tired of what I'm listening to, I am able to delve myself into yet another subgenre of metal that I had previously never heard. And it seems like the first time all over again.
Through the years I've listened to it all, from Metalcore to deathgrind and back again. It never seems to get old to me as I always seem to be able to find something new to enjoy.
Anyway, the point of this thread is to discuss music that we (we meaning metalheads) have been listening to recently. And to share why we enjoy it. It can be a brand new act or a tried and true metal outfit that you've just discovered. It doesn't matter. Hell, post a review on a metal band that you think sucks.
My picks as of April 9, 2007 :
Commit Suicide Synthetics : Some amazing technical death grind with intricate song structures and great Musicianship to back it up. Commit Suicide definitely have that heavy grindcore feel without the 30 second songs. These guys could be classified as forward thinking metal as their lyrics deal with things other than suicide, murder, and death.
Synthetics picks up right where their debut, "Human Larvae" left off, using the outro from that album as the intro for this album as a way to sort of connect the two. Although "Synthetics" is definitely the more tech grind of the two it still sports that base grindcore sound from the first. One of my new favorite bands hands down. I've been wearing out this disk since I got it. Highly recommended for those of you that are into extreme metal.
Favorite Tracks : Earthly Cleansing, Last of Life, Transient, Bastard Creature/Harmonic Skepticism, Eternal Elegy.
****
December Prying, Hoping, Nothing : This album was released in 1998 (although completely new to me) and sports an aggro-tech sound similar to Meshugah. But unlike that band they focus less on patterns and complexity and more on song structure and moving dynamics. December destroys plain and simple. I'm glad I stumbled across them. Check em out if you like good metal and are tired of the generic metalcore genre.
Favorite Tracks : Umbilical, Moutfull of Sand, 1 of 2, Lifelike(almost)
**** 1/2
Blood Has Been Shed Novella of Uriel : Although I've been into BHBS for a while now, this is the first time I've actually heard this album. For those of you who don't know, BHBS's lead singer now fronts the awesomely horrible Killswitch Engage, which has seen much mainstream success over the past couple years.
BHBS is metalcore before metalcore got bad. Heavy and laden with breakdowns, it also sports off time drumming and guitar work, although it's not as prevalent as on their sophmore release, "Spirals". The opening track kicks off the album in a memorable way with a beautiful riff followed by all out thrash guitars. The track even features violin which gives it a strangely eerie sound.
Favorite Tracks : Wetwork, Benediction, And a Seriphim Cries, Of Sand and Sulfure, Metamorph
*** 1/2
Thats all from me for now. Expect more in the future as I love discussing music.
