This happened a couple months ago, but heard it on his show tonight and thought it was a cool story that really ended up helping some unfortunate people.
I listen to a radio show host named Mike Gallagher while at work each night. He has a charitable organization named Gallagher's Army. They do a variety of things with the organizations like helping the troops, helping pets left behind in Katrina, if he hears of a child in need of something....a huge variety of things.
He recently went to Jamaica to help build houses for the poor there. Believe it or not, it only costs $2000 to build a house for a family there. Granted, it's no mansion, but it keeps them from living in mud huts, etc.
When he had returned, he had Ann Rice on the show to interview her about her new book. He asked her if she would donate a signed copy of the book and he would auction it off with proceeds going to help build more homes in Jamaica.
She not only said yes, but actually donated $2000 of her own money to the cause.
Granted, may be sappy to some, but I thought it was a nice gesture on her part and for him to travel to Jamaica to help those in need.

I don't like Rice. She had a pretty infamous meltdown on the review area for one of her books on Amazon. It really turned me off from her.
