From The Hollywood Reporter: "George A. Romero has signed on to write and direct "George A. Romero's Diary of the Dead," following in the tradition of his 1968 cult classic "Night of the Living Dead." With a story mixing elements of "The Blair Witch Project" and the long-running "Dead" series, the film will follow a group of college students shooting a horror movie in the woods who stumble upon a real zombie uprising. When the onslaught begins, they seize the moment as any good film students would, capturing the undead in a "cinema verite" style that causes more than the usual production headaches. After going more than two decades without making an independently financed zombie film, Romero told his production partner Peter Grunwald he was frustrated working within the system. "I was trying to convince Peter we could just run off and do it ourselves," he said."
Question: Where do you guys think this installment fits in the Night, Dawn, Day, Land sequence?
If you know the story arc of the 4 previous films, it seems strange for Diary to follow Land. I mean I don't think college students would be shooting a horror movie out in the woods somewhere amidst all the turmoil going on (established in the previous 4 films)...and they definitely shouldn't be suprised to stumble upon a zombie uprising at that point. It makes most sense to imagine the scenario described for Diary to be occuring sometime during the Night of the Living Dead...in some other location maybe.
Think Diary might be a prequel?

I don't think it fits in at all. Reading the article, it is written that it is "in the tradition" of the Dead films. I don't believe it will be a part of the series as much as it will just trade in on the name. But, if it is an official part of the series, I'd say your scenario is most likely.

I don't believe it will be a part of the series as much as it will just trade in on the name. Hmm...well than THAT would be something completely original and exciting. Just not sure I see George Romero himself saddling up one more time, making another zombie picture (an independently finacinced one at that), titling it "George Romero's ... of the Dead" and have it not at all connecting to a series of films sharing the same type of title and genre as well a abandoning a story spanning 4 decades thats got PLENTY of room left to be explored. However, I like the possibility. A new breed of zombie movie from the master himself? Rad. ~ :-Xsk ps - Mark...also notice it in the article it reads, "a story mixing elements of "The Blair Witch Project" and the long-running "Dead" series." Although that can be interpreted in a myriad of ways. pps- Speculating is fun.

Considering how fast the Zombie uprising occurred that the next morning ("Dawn of the Dead") it was all over the news and society was already in complete chaos, I agree that if this movie becomes part of the Dead series then it would almost certainly have to be taking place at the same time as "Night of the Living Dead."

Sweeeeet news! As long as they don't mix elements of "The Blair Witch Project 2", I'll be happy. Well...except maybe naked goth chicks.

I am a zombie movie fanatic. Man, this is a sweet surprise. I watch so many zombie films, that my young nephew who lives with me refuses to eat pizza from the local take and bake because it's called "Romero's Pizza". And you know what he think's those pies are made of. ;D

Very interesting concept combining yesterday and today horror elements. I'd say it would have to be between Night and Dawn.
I'll have to keep a look out on that one. I'm a big horror movie buff as well. I think if I had to do it all over again, I'd move to Hollywood to work on horror movies. What a fun job that would be.

I have only seen Land of the Dead of his. I guess I didn't realize that they went in order. I may have to track down the rest of them then. I love Zombie movies. I recently saw one called Undead or Un-Dead or something like that. It sucks hard. They tried to mix a zombie movie with an alien movie and it just plain doesn't work, at least the way they did it. Just out of curiosity but what do you all feel are the best zombie movies? I am personally a fan of Shaun of the Dead and 28 Days Later and the newest Dawn of the Dead wasn't too bad either.

I think the best zombie movies are indeed Romero's Dead series. My personal favorite is the original Dawn of the Dead from the late 1970s (the remake from 2004 I also liked), followed by Night of the Living Dead. The Evil Dead series is also pretty good as is 28 Days Later

Is it where the zombie gets attacked by a shark, and bites the shark back? Hilarious. I loved it.

I don't think of 28 Days Later as a zombie movie but thats just me.
My all time fav is the original "Night Of The Living Dead". Best low budget movie ever.

How can you not think of 28 Days Later as a zombie movie? The walking dead bit other people to turn them into the walking dead. The only difference is really that they explained it off as being some sort of disease.

Yeah, they were as good as dead in 28 Days Later, not necessarily reanimated corpses but I think it fits into the category anyway. I've seen Zombi as well, the version I watched was called Zombie Flesh Eaters. The shark vs. zombie was pretty funny, it was something I'd never seen before. Gory highlight of that one would have been the big sliver through the eyeball scene.
You guys are talking about favorite zombie movies and no one's mentioned House of the Dead??? (this is a joke, don't take that sentance seriously.... please).

I don't believe 28 Days Later to be a zombie movie only because I am an old school zombie guy. I.E. Zombies don't run and screech. And zombies are "reanimated" which they were not in 28 Days Later. Besides it was expalined as more of a disease (Rage I believe) anyway. Again that is just my opinion.

sickman,
I've gotta go with my old friend Werner on this one. 28 Days Later is no doubt a "zombie movie."
I mean it's got all the things that make one: -flesh eating "humanoid" monsters -apocolyptic themes -a featured cast of "survivors"
But, you're right too...i'd never seen "zombies" that ran and screeched before 28 Days Later. But that's what made it revolutionary in my opinion. The flick invented the "turbo zombie." I dunno...for me, it just worked.
Hey, Return of the Living Dead even featured "talking" zombies. If you guys haven't seen that one, I'd recommend it. It's chock full of "stereotypical" zombie stuff...and it's '80's as hell. Dig it.
Not to mention it was Dan O'Bannons (the genius writer of Alien) really original take on the genre Romero had found success with.
i can write a page on just about every movie mentioned in this thread. maybe I'll just start a poll...
~ :-Xsk
ps - poll is up.

Yeah, Return of the Living Dead. I think there are actual zombies running around in that one, actually I know there is now that I think of it. Remember the zombies bum rushing the paramedics/cops out behind the mortuary. One of them actually did a football tackle.... hard. If I remember right, O'Bannion's the one who came up with the brain eating fetish too (don't quote me on it though). I kind of like the idea that most of the actors from #1 were used again in #2.
If we went by tradition, a zombie would be more along the lines of what appeared in movies like The Serpent and the Rainbow which involves voodoo, secret concoctions, witch doctors and mind control, no actual walking dead. Romero pretty much rewrote the book in the sixties and I think the guys who put together 28 Days Later tried to do another rewrite. Not only did 28 Days Later add speed and agility, but the fact that you could be infected so easily made it scarier.
And House of the Dead taught us that zombies frequently use springboard platforms (I'm sorry, I watched it again recently and I still can't believe it. You can actually see the springboard in one of the shots).
