I saw this movie the other night.
All I can say is wow.
I believe it to be better than the original Matrix.
I won't ruin it for anyone but if you get a chance
GO SEE IT

My friend Phil told me the same thing... he was really impressed with it. I want to see it but I'll probably wait for the DVD.

It was great. I thought they crammed the "tolerance" message down my throat a little too much, but oh well. Amazing performances by Weaving and Portman. Great characters.

My knowledge of the movie is limited. What are they trying to make us tolerant of? Or will that give something away?

From what I understand, he wrote it during the Thatcher/Reagan years and thought the conservative regime was just totally evil and thought they were trying to take over everything. They're now tying it in to "evil" George W. Bush.
I could be wrong, just what I take from several outlets. I'll pass...save my money for Supes and X-Men.

The movie takes place sometime in the 2020s, at least (I forget the date mentioned in Valerie's "autobiography", but i know it was well ahead of 2006). If anyone sees any ties to Bush's present-day "regime", then i think that speaks more about Bush's policies (which apparently bear a striking resemblance to a totalitarian regime?) than it does the movie's message. The "tolerance" message Matt referred to is probably related to the fact that one of the first things that the Chancellor's party did was to round up as many homosexuals, non-Christians, and other "deviants" as they could.

thats your opinion Chris, keep dreaming about the evil regime. Blah blah blah...i see it everyday in the paper, new, etc. Blah blah blah.
But Moore has stated about writing V and tying it with Reagan/Thatcher. He was quoted in Entertainment Weekly a few weeks ago about it.
LOL...knew it'd probably be either Chris or Joe who would make a comment on that...

But Moore has stated about writing V and tying it with Reagan/Thatcher. Oh, I wasn't denying that. I knew that the original, 20-year-old graphic novel was Moore's version/opinion of Thatcher. I was just saying that if anyone thinks that the movie -- which is both set a good 20+ years in the future and based on stuff written 20ish years in the past -- applies to present-day politics... ...then shouldn't that set off alarm bells?

I just think Moore was a communist/socialist who isn't a big fan of capitalism and hated any supporter of capitalistic regimes.
But I could be wrong

Finally saw it last night... Id give it a 4.5 out of 5. I really like the story line and the fact that V read so many books. =D Over all it was a great movie but some are saying better than the Matrix... no way! I like how smart they made him out to be also... when he rambles on about those "V" words... that was too funny.

It just felt a little too contrived having the one TV guy be gay and then the two women later on. No big deal really. And Trav, don't look at the movie as a comparison to anything modern day. I'm sure some of the leftists will find their similarities, but it'd be a real stretch to read anything into it.

I saw "V for Vendetta" today and I thought it was absolutely incredible! Although I've only seen about four other movies in theaters since the start of 2006, this was definitly the best one I've seen so far this year. I'm not sure this movie will go down in history as considered overall better than the original Matrix or even Matrix Reloaded, but I thought it was certainly a much better movie than the Matrix Revolution. I also thought it was really appropriate during the closing credits that the song used was "Street Fighting Man" by the Rolling Stones.

So, they set the movie sometime in the 2020s? I know that the graphic is set in the post apocalyptic world of 1997. I guess it only makes sense to bump it forward a few more years since Moore started writing it in 1981, and finished it in 1988. I'm going to go and see it regardless because I've heard that it is possibly THE best adaptation of any of Alan Moore's books. I'm really looking forward to seeing if it is really as good as stated...
Peace.

Yeah, after seeing this movie, I now really want to read the book. For some reason, I read that Moore actually disowned the movie by refusing to have his name associated with it. Apparently he did the same thing with "From Hell" and "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen." Because "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" was one of the most disappointing movies for me in recent years, I can sort of understand why he took his name off of that movie. But I wonder why he also disowned both "From Hell" and "V for Vendetta."

I liked the movie but I don't put it on the level of Matrix, maybe a notch or two below, but still a solid and ambitious effort...a movie worth seeing and talking about.
V was a compelling character. I liked the mask and I liked his artistic and intellectual sensibilities. In fact, I wish this would have been explored even more.
The evil regime was too extreme...too one-dimensional for my tastes. The greater threat is being "taken over" by someone people actually like and support. Somebody with charisma and the ability to manipulate the masses. Hitler was able to do it and he's just one of several.

I saw this movie this weekend at I thought it was the best movie I'd seen in a long time.
People have their differences on its political connotations, but the fact that it stirs up political conversations is a great thing!
The movie was very well done and I echo the sentiments of the praising of the performances by Portman and Weaving.
4 out of 5 stars!
