For those hockey fans here,
I just got in the mail a game called NHL Icebreaker. It's a combo board and card game that came out last year. Basically, it's a little like War/Poker with players playing card or groups of card to get the advantage, then moving the puck up and down the board until someone scores.
The deck of cards is similar to ordinary playing cards but with special rules for pass/go, shots, saves, penalties, etc. You have 5 cards in your hand, which represents you line. When you refill your hand, that's basically a line change (each card has a player's position at the top so you can see who's doing what).
Ice breaker also has rules for penalties, penalty shots, overtime, and shootouts.
There's no detail with individual players; that's something you just figure out as you go. If your shot on goal card or save card has the logo for the team your playing as (all NHL teams plus All Star and international teams...though no Noway or Iceland...what were they thinking?), you automatically succeed unless your opponent has a power hand (5-card combo like in Poker).
It's quick, easy, and a lot of fun, and it has rules for up to 4 players or just solo play.
Here's a link to the site that has a lot of info for it, including a brief overview of the rules if anyone's interested. It's about $15 before shipping fees, which isn't too bad.
www.boardgamegeek.com/game/23757
(I hope I got the link right; I'm terrible with these things.)
I reccommend this for anoy who likes hockey and wants something other than a video game. The company also puts out a football game with similar rules as well.
Take care,
Jay
