Generally, I enjoy the hell out of board games, but over the past few years it only seems like I can get people to play Parchessi, or Sorry...and you can kinda get my disgust after a few years.
I received Risk for X-Mas about two/three years ago, and that's been played fairly regularly, but I have an urge to become more...adventurous to a degree in my board games. As such, I've been looking online at prospective games...
but...I'm also not very good at picking these things. Generally, my family (Sadly, that is about all I can get to play fuggin boards games with...) tend to prefer simplier games, while I want to play a game with sixty rules, and intricate designs...I doubt that'd fly.
A few of the games I've eyed, are Zombies, which I hear great things about on the board obviously, and the LOTR strategy game War of the Ring. It sounds awesome, but I dunno if i could get anyone to play it...I COULD just play around with the minitures...
Any other suggestions? I want games that break the mold a little, but don't take hours upon hours to understand.

Battleball is great. Settlers of Catan a wise choice. Apples to apples though not a board game, good stuff.

HeroScape. I just "discovered" this gem of a game....easy to learn and pick up....you build your own maps using the hexes (raised plastic). My 4 year old can practically understand the basic rules. And my wife even likes the game. In fact, from what i understand, lots of wives/girlfriends really enjoy this game for some reason. www.heroscape.comChris

Axis and Allies. I love it. you can play with 2 to 6 players. There are lots of rules but nothing too complicated. guess you just need patience to read the rule book.

I don't play it much anymore, but it has a relatively simple game system and involves a lot of strategy at the same time.

Trivial Pursuit is always fun, and they have TONS of different editions now (including DVD based games) so you might want to try some of those.
Also, any board game by the "Cranium" people is terrific.

I've got Trivia Pursuit, well a version. I'm a college student with good grades, and that game makes me feel like a complete and total dumbass.

Well, since you're already familiar with RISK, I highly rrecommend taking it to the next level and purchasing RISK 2210 A.D. It's a great, great game and adds a lot of new elements to the game (lunar/aquatic colonies, nuked areas, CCG-like card-play, etc.).
Aside from that, there are numerous other games that I can heartily recommend:
Heroscape: It's just as giood as everyone's saying it is. Maybe even better. It's also expandable, so you'll always have new options available.
Twilight Imperium (3rd edition): The price tag is pretty steep ($80), but the box weighs 10 lbs. and everything inside the box is of the highest quality. If you like sci-fi "empire builder" games, this game is for you.
Betrayal at the House on the Hill: This is a fun (if a tad unbalanced) horror boardgame with an endless amount of variety, due to all the scenarios included. A truly unique game.
Blood Bowl: The game of fantasy football. It's wacky and violent, but offers incredibly deep strategic possibilities. It's one of my favorite games ever.

My all time favorite would have to be Stratego. It's really easy to learn and play. They have several different versions from StarWars to LOTR. There is also Stratego Legends which expands on strategy, but is more expensive because you have booster packs to buy to get different soldiers and the like.

Cynthia....
I checked out Twilight Imperium.....wow. I would love to have that....just to say I have it. Maybe come tax time. But, the only problem is, I don't have very many ppl that plays these games. Surprisingly my wife actually likes Heroscape....
Have you heard of Risk Godstorm? I seen that game in a comic shop the other day, and that looks kinda cool.
But HeroScape is the game that is taking up all my thoughts at the moment. Just had a game last night after work with a guy from work....lots of fun.

Don't feel bad Hawk...I do really well at Trivial Pursuit, but I don't think it has anything to do with being "smart". It's just that my brain latches on to useless minutia while pushing out information that I really need.

If you like Twilight Imperium, check out DESCENT; JOURNEY INTO DARKNESS. Now this is an awesome board game (from the same people that brought you Twilight Imperium).
Also, check out Risk; GodStorm, any Stratego game, Pizza Box Football, and the Versus card game (Marvel and/or DC).

Risk players out there...I talked my wife into buying me Risk, Godstorm...If you like "Fantasy Epic" types of games this is pretty cool. What is also cool is that you can play the game as good old Risk without having to bring the Gods and special rules in for them if if you like. My 12 year old picked it up pretty easily but since he "isn't into" the fantasy realm he'd rather just play it as the basic Risk game.
I like the Godstorm element as the magic cards can really put your strategy to the test...Takes a couple of plays to really get the gist, but still cool.

I have been wanting to extoll Star Wars Monopoly: Saga Edition since I received it as a Christmas present.
The game is fantasitc! I had the first Star Wars Monopoly run, and this one blows it out of the water! The main thing is the figures which have been sculpted in a nice pewter and are very, very sturdy. (not supple like in my old version). The sculptures of the settlements (houses) and cities (hotels) are also great. The large SW universe is used as properties, so if you are not a big SW fan, you may not be familiar with Ord Mantell or Mon Calamari.
They have added new "Star Wars" game rules also; On rolls of double you may opt to roll again (as per normal) or you can look to to see the effect of the doubles on an included chart. Some rolls are to Draw Sith (Community Chest) or Jedi (Chance)Cards, move to any space on the board or challeneg another player for a piece of property, in which you actually battle (read: roll off) for ownership!
The overall game is the same and the SW rules are fun to use. The miniatures, as I have said, are really, really great. Darth Maul, Vader, the Emperor, Grevious, Luke, Obi Wan (Ewan McGregor), Leia (Sail Barge), Yoda ( Ep II)
If you are looking for a new Monopoly edition this is a good one to go for.. I recommend it!!!

I think I'll aim for Betrayal on...whatever...hill...forgot. I did the online demo of that and it looks *FUN*. I'll also look into Zombies, because it's fairly cheap.
Kinda...running out of cash already...

If you're willing to spend some cash on e-bay you can't go wrong with Heroquest and the expansions.
Heroscape's good too.
