Got some tidbits of information from people at THQ, Volition and Id studios:
- Forget what you've heard about the PS3 making a spring or fall debut in the U. S. Developers across the board are being urged to prepare for an August release window, and it sounds like Sony is pretty bullish on this.
- The boomerang controller that Sony debuted with it's system (at E3) will not be dumped for another design. Rumors were swirling that Sony was going to create a controller more comparable with the Dual Shock. Doesn't look like that's going to happen.
- It sounds like the PS3 will launch with Madden '07 and (wait for it . . . . ) a little game called WWE Smackdown in the launch line-up. If this is true, and if you consider the potential for MGS4, Killzone 2, Resident Evil 5 and God of War 2 to all be in the launch line-up (or coming out within 2 months of the system's launch), the potential is there for Sony to to put forth the best launch line-up in gaming history.
- It sounds like neither the PS3 hard drive nor any form of memory storage will be included with the system. Sony's biggest hurdle is not Microsoft or Nintendo. It's the economics of creating a do-all system for under $500.00 that's creating a lot of problems for them. The good news is that the PS3 will still support 7 wireless controllers (it was reported during the summer that Sony dumped this in order to cut costs), and Sony may follow Microsoft's lead and create a driver download system to play (select) PS2 games on the PS3 (retrocompatibility has also been discussed as a cost-cutting measure).
- I'm still very concerned about the direction of the PS3 because it sounds like Sony's money woes will result in a system that falls well short of what's been advertised. I am, however, excited about the possibility of seeing (and playing) Smackdown, Madden and MGS4 in HD, Blu-Ray glory by early fall of next year.
