June 8, 2007 Card #132: Louisville Gardens
1) “Philadelphia’s Greatest Son” S.D. Jones returned from a shoulder injury to get revenge on Virgil. “Special Delivery” looked focused and scored his win on Virgil after just a few minutes with one of his head butts. DUD
2) Dan “The Beast” Severn gave Chris Candido a prolonged beating, before putting him down for the 1-2-3 and his second USWA victory. To Candido’s credit, he sustained a lot of punishment from Severn even getting busted open, as the Team RPW member showcased his wrestling skills. Candido managed to make the ropes when locked in the wakigatame, but was pinned after a shoulder slam. *½
3) The Flying Redheads scored another win over “Dastardly” Danny Doring & Cousin Luke. Doring actually wrestled in and scored some nearfalls on Billy Red Lyons with his Danaconda and also his G-Spot Sweep. But Texas champion Red Bastien tagged in and locked Luke in an abdominal stretch to secure a submission. *¼
4) The Masked Superstar and King Kong Bundy showed that they could be an impressive tag team as they defeated “Playboy” Buddy Rose and Gorgeous George. Bundy hit two Avalanches on Rose in the opening minutes, letting Rose up after the first before hitting the second, but “Sensational” Sherri Martel used her “skills” to distract Kevin Christian. George got some offense in on the Heenan Family members, but couldn’t keep them down. Rose again struggled, as Superstar nearly put him down with a sleeper, but “The Human Orchid” jumped in to break up the hold. Superstar whipped Rose into the corner, then tagged in Bundy. Similar to their big win on the last card, Bundy immediately nailed another Avalanche to put down Rose for the “five”. **¼
5) Bob Orton, Sr. maintained his composure and avenged his DQ loss on the last card by pinning Greg Valentine. This was another physical match between two rulebreakers, although “The Hammer” seemed to be favored by the Louisville Gardens fans on this occasion. Valentine actually used Orton’s own finisher against him, hitting a big piledriver. Orton looked to be out, but just got his foot on the ropes before the three, which relieved Bobby “The Brain” Heenan. (Capt. Lou Albano tried to accuse Heenan of putting Orton’s foot there, but Heenan was innocent…for once!) “The Big O.” made a comeback and wore Valentine down. He hit his own piledriver and scored the pinfall. ***¾
6) Justin Credible scored another big upset this time over Bruiser Brody. The match quickly went to the arena floor where Brody was pounding away on Credible. Jim Cornette attempted to smack Brody from behind with the tennis racket, but Brody saw it coming and cut him off. Paul Morton got distracted and yelled at Cornette to stay out of the match. Meanwhile Brody turned around and got cracked in the face by Credible’s Singapore cane. Credible threw Brody back in to the ring, then climbed up the turnbuckles. Dazed from the cane shot, Brody spun around and got hit by a flying body press from Credible. Credible made the cover and scored the pinfall, although Brody kicked out just after three. The New Mexican madman naturally was upset by the result, but Credible and Cornette walked away the winner(s). ½*
7) Two tag team competitors went one-on-one, as Hawk defeated one-half of the World Tag Team champions “Loverboy” Dennis Condrey. This should have been a Finisher Match, as Hawk used his flying clothesline several times (even busting Condrey open), while “Loverboy” Dennis would later use his face-first leg sweep several times. Not surprisingly “Precious” Paul Ellering and Jim Cornette got involved in the match and started going after each other! Hawk would eventually gain the win after another flying clothesline. ****
8) Frank Gotch scored a decisive tap out win over Sabu. The former Southern champ was focused, taking Sabu down early. He locked on a guillotine choke and as Sabu struggled to get to the ropes, Gotch switched over into his Gotch Toehold. He pulled Sabu into the center of the ring. Abdullah Farouk was about to get on the apron, but Dick Hutton (who accompanied Gotch to ringside) pulled him down. Sabu was left with no choice but to tap out. DUD
9) Mad Dog Vachon earned himself and his brother Butcher a shot at the World Tag Team tiles next week in Austin by defeating the other half of the champions “Beautiful” Bobby Eaton. Mad Dog used his piledriver several times. He seemed to focus on Eaton’s face, as he pounded away on his forehead and chomped away, showing it truly was “Dog Eat Dog”. Eaton wore the crimson mask, but started to come back, coming off the top rope with the Alabama Jam, but Mad Dog kicked out. Eaton used the Divorce Court on Mad Dog, but Capt. Lou distracted Frank Morrell. Jim Cornette (surprise, surprise!) got involved and chased away his managerial rival, threatening to crack him again with the tennis racket! Eaton hit a second Alabama Jam, but Mad Dog still managed to kick out. The Algerian came back and picked up Eaton into an airplane spin. The dizzying effects of the maneuver combined with the loss of blood put Eaton down for the three-count and earned the struggling Vachon Brothers a World Tag Team title shot. ****½
10) Ed “Strangler” Lewis definitely had the crowd on his side as he got a second opportunity at Antonio Inoki and the USWA World Heavyweight championship in the main event. The two started off slowly, showing their mat skills, although Lewis had control in the opening minutes and was able to counter the champ several times. He threw Inoki with the Strangler’s Headlock, but Inoki got his shoulder up before three. The champ came back and locked Lewis into a cobra twist, but “Strangler” reached the ropes. Inoki hit an enzuigiri, but Lewis kicked out, bringing the crowd to its feet. Inoki locked in the octopus hold, but Lewis again got to the ropes. Even with the champ in control, the Gardens did not give up and erupted with huge “Strangler” chants. The normally calm champ seemed frustrated with the crowd. He started to focus his attack on Lewis’ legs, striking with big karate kicks, the same way he defeated Lewis last month in Nashville. Lewis would not go down, probably due to the adrenaline from his hometown crowd. Lewis was in one corner of the ring and Inoki continued his barrage of kicks. Jerry Calhoun started his five-count, warning the champ to back off and let Lewis out of the corner. Inoki refused to listen and continued to kick away, leaving Calhoun no choice but to disqualify the champ. Lewis got the victory in his hometown, but of course due to the disqualification, Inoki remained the champion. The Gardens were upset about this and verbally assaulted the champion, as he left the arena with his belt in hand. Lewis stood in the ring, looking upset, not only because he still didn’t have the championship, but upset by his opponent’s actions. **¼
What did Inoki and Lewis have to say on USWA Championship Wrestling the next day? Come back later for the update, as well as the matches for Card #133 in Austin!

USWA Championship Wrestling from June 9:
*Antonio Inoki and his Japanese entourage appeared in the studio and were interviewed by Bill Apter. Inoki’s interpreter apologized on his behalf, stating that he got carried away being “cheered against” and ignored referee Jerry Calhoun’s instructions. He apologized not only to “Strangler” Lewis, but to Calhoun, and to the Louisville fans. The champ has loved the American fans’ support during his USWA tenure, but understand and respects the Gardens fans’ reaction to their hometown hero. *Lewis was later interviewed by Lance Russell. Russell asked the Louisville native if he accepted the World champion’s apology. Lewis said he can understand when one gets caught up in the action of a wrestling match and forgets what is going on. He did accept Inoki’s apology and said he hoped that, since he did not lose to the champion, he will receive another championship match. Russell informed him that Jerry Jarrett from the USWA Committee had told him before the show that Lewis will receive another opportunity but the date and card has not been decided upon. Lewis started to talk about his rematch with Bob Orton, Sr. on the next card (see Card #133 preview below). Bobby “The Brain” Heenan interrupted and told Lewis that the international wrestlers in the USWA seem to be “out to get” Lewis. Mil Mascaras interfered in his match with Heenan’s man Orton on Card #130, causing him to be disqualified. Then Inoki gets “deliberately” disqualified to retain the World championship. Lewis thanked Heenan for his “concern”, but stated that he doesn’t think that Mascaras and Inoki have anything against him. Lewis mentioned their battles with the Heenan Family and noted that “The Brain” doesn’t always follow the rules when his men wrestle. Heenan was appauled by this accusation and said that “The Big O.” will put the “Strangler” out with the piledriver in Austin. *Heenan later announced that he had received great news this week and that two-time USWA World Heavyweight champion Nick Bockwinkel is expected to recover from his concussion and will return to the ring. He said that a match has been signed between Bockwinkel and Giant Baba, who will also return from his neck injury caused by The Masked Superstar and the Family. This match will take place on a card in Baba’s native country for All Japan Pro Wrestling (AJPW) on July 3 at the famed Budokan Hall. AJPW has granted permission for this match air on USWA Championship Wrestling on July 7. “The Brain” said that Bockwinkel will defeat Baba in his homeland and come back to win his third USWA World title. *Speaking of injured wrestlers, Russell verified that both Buddy Rogers and Animal will return on June 22 on Card #134 in the USWA’s homebase of Memphis. The “Nature Boy” will team with “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka and Bruiser Brody in a six-man battle against the three men that put him out—“Playboy” Buddy Rose, Gorgeous George, and Chris Candido. And Animal and Hawk will take on the World Tag Team champions The Midnight Express in a non-title Street Fight—where the wrestlers come dressed as they are and anything goes!
The USWA returns to the City Coliseum in Austin, TX on June 15! *Mil Mascaras looks to avenge his loss in the tag bout on Memorial Day, as he locks up once again with the massive King Kong Bundy. “The Man of 1,000 Masks” is the only so far to pin the New Jersey giant. Will it be the luchador reigning supreme or can Bundy score the five-count? *In a huge and historic tag team match, two members of Team RPW team up for the first time in a match as Frank Gotch and George Hackenschmidt will take on Southern Heavyweight champion The Sheik and Sabu! Gotch beat Sabu decisively, but now both he and “The Russian Lion” want The Sheik. Abdullah Farouk reported that Sheik’s ribs are healed up and he will be at his full dangerous force! Can Team RPW score the victory and how will Gotch and Hackenschmidt function in tag action? *In a rematch described in the TV report, Ed “Strangler” Lewis battles “The Big O.” Bob Orton, Sr. Can Orton continue his winning ways or will he get caught in the Strangler’s Headlock? *Jim Cornette hopes to make his mama happy and walk out of the Lone Star State even wealthier, as all of his men will be in title matches. First of all Justin Credible looks to regain the USWA Texas championship from Red Bastien. Since losing the belt, the cane swinger has gained victories over “Strangler” Lewis, Greg “The Hammer” Valentine, and most recently Bruiser Brody. Can he win back the gold or will one-half of the Flying Redheads hold on to the gold? *The main event will be a big tag team battle as Cornette’s Midnight Express defend the USWA World Tag Team championship against Capt. Lou Albano’s wild team of the Vachon Brothers! Albano has more of the momentum, with Mad Dog’s win over “Beautiful” Bobby, their six-man DQ win over Cornette and the Express on Memorial Day, and Credible’s two wins over Valentine. But the Vachons still have the “black cloud” over them, that they haven’t won a regular tag team match this year. Can Albano’s boys break their losing streak and capture the gold out of nowhere or will “Beautiful” Bobby and “Loverboy” Dennis retain their belts? And will we see Cornette and Albano go at it once again? All this plus two rivals meet up again, as Bruiser Brody battles Gorgeous George. Koko B. Ware returns to action, teaming with S.D. Jones to battle Danny Doring and Virgil, Billy Red Lyons in singles competition, and more!

I like that Inoki fan angle Cory. As you know, many of the fans were conditioned to hate anyone who "wasn't one of them", meaning if you were a foreigner, or even a Northerner, you were an instant heel.
and there is one thing I always wondered about Strangler Lewis card. Was he really from Louisville? After looking a few times, I thought it was a misprint from the Jim Cornette card.

I found out later that Strangler was born in Wisconsin, but later moved to Louisville. I have to check my sources again, but I think he lived most of his life in Louisville. Strangler and Cornette were in different sets, by the way.

I found out later that Strangler was born in Wisconsin, but later moved to Louisville. I have to check my sources again, but I think he lived most of his life in Louisville. Strangler and Cornette were in different sets, by the way. I had read he was born in the midwest as well, but ending up living in Louisville....that's pretty cool info there Cory! Thanks for that. The reason I thought it may have been a misprint was that I use a template and sometimes forget to change something (ahem, Jackie Kabuki). I thought he had used a printing template with Cornette's stats and forgot to change the ht,wt, home But that's interesting news. I think Cornette may have a new "influence" on the Strangler!!!

I think Cornette may have a new "influence" on the Strangler!!! I wrote this up in one of the recent card reports when Strangler lost to Justin Credible, but I played up how Lewis was "surprised" that a fellow Louisvillian like Cornette would interfere in a match. I may do some more interaction between the two later on. We'll have to see what happens!

Thanks for the kind words, Korgano. Glad you enjoy reading! ...Credible beating Brody surprized you didn't it?.........Take that cane away from Credible and he would never win a match It didn't totally surprise me that Credible won, since he's beaten other big names in the past. The fact that he won so fast did surprise me, as Brody only had one fatigue token on him and rolled a "snake eyes" or "3" when Credible hit the Deathjump. The Singapore cane definitely has brought him a few victories. I played Card #133 last night. Some interesting results all around! I'll try to post them tonight or tomorrow.

Cory, I think you have a great fed and I am looking forward to reading more of your results.Mr. Vegas Thanks for the kind words, Mr. Vegas. And here's what you were looking forward to!June 15, 2007 Card #133: City Coliseum in Austin1) Greg Valentine pinned Jimmy Snuka in the opener. “The Hammer” looked focused after some recent losses, controlling most of the action here. “Superfly” survived the figure-four, but went down to a piledriver—ironically the same move that Valentine lost to on the last card. ½* 2) Koko B. Ware returned from injury and scored his first tag team victory of the year with S.D. Jones, beating the men who put him out of action—Danny Doring and Virgil. This was actually the first time Doring and Virgil had teamed in a standard two-on-two tag match and they worked well together, actually tagging in and out, as opposed to when either one teams with Cousin Luke! They worked over “Special Delivery”, before Jones was able to tag in “The Birdman”. Ware scored the pinfall on Virgil after coming off the top rope with a missile dropkick, while Jones held off Doring. **¾ 3) Dan Severn continued his winning ways, scoring a submission on Cousin Luke. The hillbilly had some moments of hope, but Severn’s pure wrestling and submission skills, especially his fireman’s carry slam which he used twice, wore down Luke. Luke tapped to the wakigatame. ¼* 4) Billy Red Lyons pinned Chris Candido. Candido hit the Blonde Bomb early on, but Lyons managed to kick out. While Candido was complaining that Kevin Christian was counting too slowly, Lyons rolled him into a small package, but only got a two-count. The Redhead came back and locked Candido in his figure-four leglock, bringing about a tap out from the blonde bombshell. While Lyons continues to have success in the USWA, Candido struggles, as he has yet to win a singles match in 2007. (He has won in tag matches.) ** 5) King Kong Bundy scored an impressive victory over Mil Mascaras. After some early back-and-forth exchanges, the battle went to the arena floor, where Bundy proceeded to pick the luchador up in a bear hug and rammed his back into the ringpost. Mascaras barely beat the 10-count back into the ring, but then received three Avalanches! To the shock of the Austin crowd, Mascaras was able to kick out each time, but finally went down to a fourth Avalanche. DUD 6) Bruiser Brody scored a quick win over Gorgeous George. Two jumping knee drops put the “Human Orchid” down for the 1-2-3. Afterwards, Brody came off the top rope with another big knee drop on George, just for good measure. ¼* 7) Frank Gotch and George Hackenschmidt tag teamed for the first time, but unfortunately went down in defeat to their sadistic rivals, the Southern Heavyweight champion The Sheik and Sabu. The Team RPW teammates started off working well, tagging in and out and punishing Sabu. Sabu hit a huracanrana out of nowhere on “The Russian Lion” and got a two-count. He tagged in his uncle who took advantage and pounced on Hackenschmidt, locking in the Camel Clutch and holding it on for over two minutes. Hackenschmidt eventually had to surrender to the punishing hold. **¼ 8) Bob Orton, Sr. continued his string of big wins defeating Ed “Strangler” Lewis in a double bloody match. Orton focused his attack on Lewis’ legs, which World champion Antonio Inoki had worked over in Lewis’ title match last week in his hometown. Orton scored a nearfall with a backslide, but Lewis quickly recovered and threw “The Big O.” down with the Strangler’s Headlock. Lewis kept the hold on for over two minutes. Orton was getting weaker and looked about ready to go out, but unbeknownst to Lewis and Paul Morton, Bobby Heenan put Orton’s foot on the bottom rope. Morton noticed the foot and Lewis had to break the hold. Both men were covered in blood and were going back-and-forth in control. Orton controlled the action and hit his piledriver to put the “Strangler” down for the big three-count. ****½ 9) Jim Cornette made his mama proud, as his charge Justin Credible regained the USWA Texas championship from Red Bastien. The bodyguard Credible was ultra aggressive working over the champion and busting him open. Midway through the match, Credible executed a short power bomb on Bastien, a move with which he won the title the first time. It looked like Bastien was down for the count, but he got his shoulder up at 2¾. The champ did make a comeback and hit his atomic drop, but only got a two-count. Credible came back and with Jerry Calhoun distracted by Cornette, used his Singapore cane cracking Bastien twice over the head. He covered Red and Calhoun turned around in time to count the three and award Justin the belt. Credible is the second man to hold the Texas gold twice (after inaugural champion Nikolai Volkoff). **½ 10) The main event saw the battle between Jim Cornette and Capt. Lou Albano continue, as The Midnight Express put the World Tag Team titles on the line against The Vachons. The champs started off with some nearfalls on Mad Dog, but Mad Dog tagged in his larger brother who used his strength to wear down “Beautiful” Bobby. The Algerians double teamed Eaton, keeping him in the ring for several minutes. Mad Dog busted Eaton open after a big jumping knee drop. “Loverboy” Dennis got back in to it and scored a nearfall on Butcher after a gut wrench suplex. Capt. Lou started jawing at Cornette and Justin Credible, while Mad Dog and Eaton started brawling on the floor. Butcher tried to take advantage of the confusion and grabbed his brother’s chains. He wrapped them around Condrey’s neck (which was injured by The Road Warriors in December at New Year’s Knockout III) and hung him over the top rope, choking him. Jerry Calhoun caught this action and disqualified the Vachons, giving the champs the victory. Greg “The Hammer” Valentine made his way out, defending his manager. Both sides started brawling, but USWA officials broke it up before things could escalate. ***¾ Coming up in the next report, an international superstar is headed to the USWA, a former USWA tag team is headed back to the area, and who will be The Sheik’s next challenger for the Southern title?!

USWA Championship Wrestling from June 16:
*The big news of the show was announced by World champion Antonio Inoki’s entourage. The announcement was that another Japanese superstar will soon be wrestling in the USWA. That wrestler is the famous Rikidozan! Rikidozan has wrestled in all the major wrestling promotions in Japan and has held the IWGP World Heavyweight title in New Japan Pro Wrestling and the PWF World Heavyweight and All Japan International titles in All Japan Pro Wrestling. He is one of the most well-known celebrities, not just wrestler, in his homeland. Giant Baba got in touch with Rikidozan during his time in his home country, while he has been recovering from his neck injury. Rikidozan is scheduled to debut on July 13 in Knoxville, the same night that Giant Baba is set to return to USWA action. He is coming to team with his fellow countrymen Inoki and Baba and battle the Heenan Family or anyone other USWA wrestlers that wants to challenge them. Rikidozan’s goal is also to win gold in the USWA to add to his prestigious credentials. *Team RPW was interviewed. Dick Hutton announced that while he will still wrestle, he will also accompany the other members to the ring for their matches, whenever possible. Bill Apter asked if that meant Hutton would be the manager for the team. Hutton said that he will be considered the “coach” to the team—to encourage his teammates and give them guidance during their matches. He said that he will not interfere in matches, unless he feels the rules are being broken. Of course we’ve seen Team RPW bend the rules a few times in the past, so we’ll see if Coach Hutton sticks to his word! *Lance Russell announced that The Killer Bees will be returning to the USWA at the end of July! The popular duo of B. Brian Blair and “Jumping” Jim Brunzell lost a Losers-Leave-Town Match to The Dream Team (Greg Valentine & Brutus Beefcake) on April 7, 2006 in Evansville. The stipulation for the match stated that the losing team had to leave for one year. The Bees have been wrestling in the WWF and while they did not capture the World Tag Team titles there, they have had success. Russell said that The Bees will be in the WMC-TV studios for an interview in coming weeks, but aired some footage from their time in the WWF this past year.
The USWA comes home to Memphis and the Mid-South Coliseum on June 22! *”The Russian Lion” George Hackenschmidt will take on rival Sabu. Sabu scored a DQ win on Hackenschmidt on May 11 in Chattanooga and he and Uncle Sheik made him give to the Camel Clutch last week in Austin. Can Hack get revenge or will Sabu’s wild tactics put the strongman down? *Speaking of rivalries, “The Big O.” Bob Orton, Sr. wants to keep his momentum as he locks up again with “The Man of 1,000 Masks” Mil Mascaras! Can Orton gain a third win over the luchador? And what shape will Mascaras be in after receiving four Avalanches from Orton’s Heenan Family teammate—King Kong Bundy?! *Ed “Strangler” Lewis is looking for a win over a champion…he’ll get his chance in a non-title bout with Texas champ Justin Credible. These two have had big battles in the past. Lewis made it clear he is not interested in the Texas title at this time, but wants to face a champion before his rematch for the World Heavyweight title. Can Lewis get back on track and headlock the brawler or will Credible cane his way to victory? *The “Nature Boy” is back! Buddy Rogers will team up with “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka and Bruiser Brody to face the men who put him out of action—“Playboy” Buddy Rose, Gorgeous George, and Chris Candido. Can Rogers gain revenge on this heinous trio? *Animal returns to action as well, as he and Hawk will battle the World Tag Team champions The Midnight Express in a non-title Street Fight! As much as The Road Warriors would like another shot at the belts, they are looking for revenge on this night. There will be no disqualifications or countouts in this match, and the wrestlers come dressed as they are. Who will walk out of this brawl the winners? *In the main event, The Sheik will put the Southern Heavyweight title on the line against Greg “The Hammer” Valentine. Capt. Lou Albano made the challenge on WMC-TV, citing Valentine’s impressive win over Jimmy Snuka last week and the fact that Valentine pinned then-Southern champ Frank Gotch in the first round of the #1 Contender’s tournament back in April in San Antonio. The USWA Committee granted Valentine the shot. “The Hammer” came close to giving The Sheik his first loss, back in December. Sabu prevented the victory, which set off the battles between Valentine and Sabu. Can “The Hammer” capture the Southern gold or will The Sheik keep his “death grip” on the belt? All this plus The Flying Redheads battle The Vachons, The Masked Superstar and King Kong Bundy team up, and Team RPW teammates and former World Tag Team champions Frank Gotch and Dick Hutton in action!
