You know, in rereading this, I went too far. So take it with a grain of salt. I'm cool with Swarm if he's cool with me. I'll still toss one back with you in Jamestown in July, bro.
I need sleep, is what it is.
But regardless, I'll keep writing the way I write, sleep-deprived or not.

Mark, you are under Dr. Steinhoff's orders to go to sleep. If you don't, I'll come over to your house with an acoustic guitar and sing my Rouser song.
I'm not kidding.

Boy, should I really post this? why wouldn't you care? I don't get that. Because it's just a way for you to try to slam my style for this game. That's fine. I'm not taking it personally. Everyone on God's green earth knows that you like Tom's stuff and not mine. It's all good. But when I write, I have an eye on the story that needs to be told. If that means I introduce people who move the story along for a particular character without giving them a card, I do it. Sue me. I would never write something I didn't like or that wasn't true to the vision I have in my head. I'm a firm believer that a writer has to do that if anybody's going to like what they do. Most people who play the CPC seem to have no problem with these extra people. I can't second-guess or censor myself because I think there might be a minority who don't agree with the direction. That's a fool's errand. Do you really want a card for Gunnar's mother? Not everybody needs a card. Sure helped explain who he was, though. I haven't had a very good week. Sorry if I've vented too much. holy crap. last time I checked I have paid for every CPC set that has ever been released. it was just a question.

Only COTG I'm playing right now is CPC.
You know you're the bomb, Mark. Please don't stress it if someone really is hating on your work.

LOL..I was kinda shocked reading Mark's 1st response! I didn't think Swarm was saying anything malicious about why they (characters) didn't have cards. (Imagine, Rob not saying anything malicious!! JK Rob ) I did a mock up of Duck Boy a while back and showed it to Mark...but I dropped the ball and didn't follow up on it after starting up bootlegs for all the Legends stuff. I just think has my disease now...2 kids, married, work....enough to make anyone nuts!!! Hey Mark...you know I understand ya bud! BTW, here is the 1st Duck Boy I did. I remembered Mark and myself talking about him having a bill or something, but when Id did one of those...it kinda looked a tad "odd". I thought this had some fun stuff about it.

I can see why on the face of things, the topic of the thread might seem innocent. On its own, I wouldn't mind it, either.
But when you say you fall asleep during a two-page character development write-up in the Promoter, and when you compare one of the toughest guys in the league to a Teletubby, to name just a couple recent examples, your track record is established. I just don't know how this helps Tom sell games, which I'm sure is Swarm's (and everyone else's) ultimate goal here.
Not asking for a blanket "Everything rocks!" commentary. I never minded constructive criticism. Things like Tinky-Winky seem less so. Not that everything he's ever said has been unconstructive. I'm just hard-pressed to think of something positive, with no left-handed compliments attached, that Swarm's said about the sets. Ever. Especially on the old guestbook. You notice these things when you're the writer.
But thank you for buying them and supporting Filsinger Games. CATACLYSM will get the dice rolling like never before. I feel real good about it.

Man, never thought this thread would take a turn like this. I didn't get the impression that Swarm was trying to hate on the CPC or Mark's writing style or anything at all. If he was, it sure didn't come across like that to me. I guess that's the problem with the internet ... all you get are words on a screen. It's impossible to know the tone of the message (unless it's a splattercat post ;D ;D ;D ) I haven't had a chance to play much lately (due to stressin out over finding a job and all that wonderful stuff) but Swarm's question in this post did get me to break out my CPC cards, which re-ignited my interest in the fed. So at least some good came of it. And I hope next week is better for you Mark. Oh, and Trav, that is an awesome rendition of Duck Boy! At lease SOMEONE appreciates the possible merit of smileys... ;D

I can't say I was very surprised by Mark's comments, as Swarm has had a bit of history in poking fun at the CPC. I doubt Rob was trying to be malicious, but I can understand how Mark can feel put down when his buttons are pushed for a while.
I personally really enjoy Mark' writing style, as it is closest to the style I would have if I was able to write a lick at all, compared to the vastly different styles of Tom and Kris. While space contraints have limited Mark from releasing too many non-wrestling characters, such as a Group of 7 card, many of these character have no real reason to have a card but do alot to explain the motivations of the existing CPC wrestlers (a concept not completely absent from the GWF).
I'm really looking forward to Cataclysm next week, should be a pretty sweet game edition from everything Mike says.
(Awsome Duckboy pic Trav. Quack Quack!)

To be fair, I know that Swarm has given Mark some ribbing (some would use a stronger word) over the years about his writing style. On the other hand, he does purchase all of the game editions.....
I think that Todd hit the nail on the head. Mark has a distinct style, and I enjoy how he fleshes out a plot and never leaves plot threads unresolved. Mark is VERY organized and plans everything out. By contrast, Tom "goes with the flow" and often doesn't resolve plot threads in his own head until he's writing a subsequent game edition.
Mark's style has given us 20-26 "non-carded" character references. Tom's style has given us the Alpha Stone, questions over Bloodline's age and other oddities. Neither is "wrong"- I think that too many people try to nitpick (and I'm not referring to Swarm here). I know that can be frustrating to any creator (even the big guy) and flattering at the same time since it's great to know that people pay enough attention to care. Tom's commented to me on more than one occasion how blown away he is by the emotion that his creation inspires.
Both Tom and Mark (and Kris and the Legends guys) provide me with hours of entertainment.- and they give us something worth discussing on this board. I admire the creative team for COTG and LOW- this game only matters because they keep us interested.

Some of the best writers retcon and make things up as they go. Problem is, when you do that, you open yourself up for crticism. Mark plans ahead to avoid this. But I've never noticed a real difference between his and Tom's writing. I never really cared that much to tell you the truth. As long as everything makes sense, it's all good to me.
But the whole Alpha Stone fiasco was ridiculous. Horrible explanation.

I think Mark's CPC stuff is a nice contrast to the GWF. And I often find myself enjoying the CPC sets more then the GWF sets. Some of Mark's storylines seem more engaging, and he always seems to add that element of mystery that keeps you waiting for the next edition.
Why have a card for every character mentioned in the booklets? You'd have a ton of unecessary cards that you'd have no use for. Thats a waste of space in the sets.

I just don't know how this helps Tom sell games, which I'm sure is Swarm's (and everyone else's) ultimate goal here. right, because in America, people only buy what Swarm likes, and if he thinks it looks like a teletuby, no one is going to buy it. everyone knows that. it was just a question...Payback and I were trying to figure it out and couldn't. That's pretty much it.
