Ever since I got a job for the summer, I've been able to catch up on my indy wrestling, mainly ROH and Chikara. I got a bunch of ROH DVDs from my local wrestling shop (seriously) and spent my free time watching them over the last week. Here are my thoughts on the shows.
The 100th Show
Keep in mind that this Milestone show was held during the ROH Vs CZW war, an excellant promotional feud that went on for most of 2006. We start with a solid match between Claudio Castagnoli & Chris Daniels. Claudio wins and Daniels finally gives a handshake to show respect, claiming that Claudio has a future in ROH. We get a promo from Lacey, who's only wearing a large t-shirt. She promises to take it off if Jimmy Jacobs wins the next match. Speaking of the next match we have three Jimmys (Jacobs, Rave & Yang) and a Delirious in a 4 Corner Survival. The fans catch on and sing a "Let's Go Jimmy" chant during the match. Jacobs could have won but, in an act of chivalry and true love, he decides against it only to tap out to Delirious' Cobra Stretch. Aries & Strong defend their tag titles against Homicide & Ricky Reyes. It was okay but they didn't seem to be in it much. And now to my disturbance, the DVD starts skipping over to Bryan Danielson mooning the CZW crowd. The DVD continues to skip over a large chunk of the show. I have to miss Danielson Vs Colt Cabana, a Top of the Class Trophy defence, Danielson Vs Delirious (I was really looking forward to that one) & the Briscoes beating AJ Styles & Matt Sydal. The DVD goes back to normal with a spirited debate between ROH's Jim Cornette and CZW's John Zandig. We end the DVD with a chaotic 6 man tag between Samoa Joe, BJ Whitmer and Ace Steel against Chris Hero, Necro Butcher & Super Dragon. Claudio comes out and turns on ROH as CZW ends the night in their favour. Onto the next DVD.
Chicago Spectacular Night 1
Kikutaro and Tank Toland is the first match. I never get tired of Kikutaro's comedy. He even gave a long speech while trying to suplex Tank only to get it reversed when he finished talking. Toland wins in his first match. The Briscoes defeat Irish Airborne in a good tag bout. Brent Albright cuts an effective promo establishing the fact that his goal in ROH is to make money. He gets DQ'ed against Homicide but injures Homicide's bad shoulder, taking a payoff from Bryan Danielson. BJ Whitmer won a fun 4 corner survival. Jimmy Rave, now in his current serious persona almost breaks Nigel McGuinness' heel with the Heel Hook. Delirious & Ace Steel (they are suitable for each other) defeat Adam Pearce & Shane Hagadorn. Colt Caban beats Jimmy Jacobs by DQ but gets attacked by Jimmy and Brent Albright. Lacey then stomped the heel in her shoe into Colt's groin (ouch, ouch, ouch!). Aries & Strong defeat Dragon Gate's Shingo & Naruki Doi (I love the Doi 555) in a great tag title match. The main event was Samoa Joe and Bryan Danielson in a good steel cage match.
Fifth Year Festival: Finale
Now we're onto the top class stuff. The show was in Liverpool, England and the crowd was really into it. To start off we see BJ Whitmer and Jimmy Jacobs brawling backstage. Delirious beat Colt Caban in a hilarious match. Colt, who is a big fan of the old British style of wrestling, came out dressed like Big Daddy and carried a baby doll, which Delirious soon chewed on. Colt Daddy even carried a teenager as if he was carrying a child on his shoulders. Still, it was one of the funniest wrestling matches I've ever seen and I've seen a lot. Sara Del Ray & Allison Danger beat Jetta & Eden Black. Sara, Allison and Eden were good. I think Jetta was only there because she was available at the time. BJ Whitmer & Jimmy Jacobs are seen fighting in the crowd, leading to their brutal falls count anywhere match. BJ won with a painful Brainbuster onto the ramp. Matt Sydal and PAC had an entertaining high flyer match which Sydal won. The Briscoes had an awesome match against each other which ended in a draw, but the two definately manned up. Dragon Gate's Naruki Doi & Shingo defeated Strong and Richards in another great tag match. Nigel McGuinness defeated Jimmy Jacobs in a top class Fight Without Honor. Several spots involved a security barrier bridged between the ring and the barrier. It was really bent out of shape by the end of the match. Nigel won with a vicious Lariat. Finally Samoa Joe defeated Homicide in his last ROH match, which was good but not great. Joe was clearly tired from wrestling a hard fought match against Nigel McGuinness the night before. Still it was a memorable moment.
Supercard Of Honor II
I haven't seen all of this yet but so far it is a great show. Jay Briscoe & Delirious defeated Sydal & Daniels. Daniels was playing up as a cocky heel but his mic work seemed forced. Delirious got a big pop when he told everyone to man up. I love this guy. Claudio defeated Dragon Gate rookie Yamato in a good match. Yamato was impressive while Claudio used his new finisher. He also seems to be a face again. That's good because the crowd loves him. Erick Stevens wins a squash match. I finished off by watching the DG main event of CIMA, Susumu Yokosuka & Shingo beating Dragon Kid, Ryo Saito & Masaaki Mochizuki. I cannot stress aenough just how awesome the match was. It was slow at the start but my God did it speed up at the end. The only problem I have is that at the end Susumu wasn't able to fully hit the World Liner finisher on Dragon Kid. When he hits it right, it is perfect.
So that is what I have been watching these past few days. But it does not end there as I now have Chikara DVDs that just came in this morning. Man, is my weekend going to be busy.
