Tonight when I got home from the casino, there was some car parked in my assigned parking spot. When I went to pick up my mail, I saw they were gone and moved my truck over to its correct spot.
When I got out of my truck, I saw a black wallet on the ground. Inside of it there is over $100 in cash and some dude's credit card. But I'm honest and I really don't want to take his money. I was hoping I could find out what apartment he lived in so I could return his wallet with everything in it, but according to his driver's license he doesn't live in my apartment complex and I have no idea who he was visiting here (I'd have to knock on about 30 doors of people I don't know just in the area he was parked in).
I'm just looking for advice:
What should I do with this?
Should I mail it to the address listed on his driver's license and hope he hasn't moved?
Should I turn it into my landlord?
Should I do something else? If so what?
I am sort of leaning toward mailing it (without my name and return address) even though I don't know if the address is current.

If he doesn't live at the address listed on his driver's license, then he's an idiot for not getting his address change registered with the DMV.

None of the above. Take it to the police and let them deal with it.

None of the above. Take it to the police and let them deal with it. Havoc, Why do you suggest the police? Because they're the police. The only other option would be looking him up in the phone book. The police are there for more than just patrolling for major crimes. When you find something that is not yours, the right thing is to turn it in to the cops. Most people, however, would just take the cash and dump the wallet.

But if I turn it into the police, does this guy's chances of recovering his wallet increase versus me trying to mail it to him? I'm not thinking that the cops will take the money. But will they try to find him or just hold it at the station for the possibility that he might think to look there for it?

I just tried to find this dude's phone # on information. They didn't have a listing for him by his first and last name except for one that was also listed for a lady (probably his wife?).
But I don't think that's him because according to his driver's license because the address doesn't match and he is only 18 years old (about to turn 19 later this month) and there was even a high school ID card (but not the high school I teach at) in the wallet. But since it is a 2006-07 school year card along with the fact that his driver's license says he is about to turn 19, I don't think he goes there anymore- so I'm not sure sending it to that school would do any good either.

None of the above. Take it to the police and let them deal with it. Surprisingly, I agree with Havoc. Give it to the police, and they'll put in the calls and such needed to get it back to him. Plus, if I'd have lost a wallet, that would be the first place I'd go after combing the last place I remember having it. If you just mail it to him, there's a lot to go wrong - most notably the chance that the address on his identification isn't correct.

If there was no money, I'd mail it. But with money, I'd drop it off at the cops.

Thnaks for the feedback. Instead of trying to mail it to him, I will take the wallet and everything in it to the police. From reading some of my posts, some people here might consider Mr. Vegas a drunk, a gambler, and a womanizer. While it's true that: I'm no stranger to alcohol (but I usually only drink responsibly and almost never drink on a night before I have to teach the next day and I never ever drink and drive) I have a passion for gambling on sports (but I usually only gamble for fun/responsibly and 95% of my gambling only takes place at the sportsbook) And yes I do like hot chicks about my same age, I am still honest and I want to do the right thing. For me, it's all about doing the right thing. I know a couple of people on the LVPD. I'll try to call them later today.

Yeah, and I also know Ed Deline and Mary Connell Since my last post, I called my friend on the LVPD and he's apparently out of town. My ex-girlfriend from last summer is about to joint the LVPD but probably can't help me out since she is only entering the academy later this month. I think I'll just drive the wallet over to the police station.

I just got done talking to the police over the phone. It took me awhile to find where they were located here, I did an Internet search by typing in The Police Las Vegas and I got back alot of stuff on the band's past concerts on The Strip so I decided to just call them.
They told me the local station by my place is closed today. Although the main station downtown is of course open even on Sundays, the officer told me it's perfectly OK to wait until I get done teaching tomorrow to turn the wallet in to the station closest to me. And if the guy goes to the police looking for it, I think he'd probably start with the station closest to where he lost it anyways.
