I don't think they'd take their most bankable star and keep him at home for a few months on purpose... but I do wonder if they intentionally exaggerated the extent of Cena's injury from the very start in anticipation of doing a surprise return..

I think that makes more sense. Its possible that the sling he used in the Christmas show was a work.
