Now I know the easy answer would be to trade down, but I don't think it's going to be as easy as people always seem to think trading down can be (look at last year with Houston)...
Mel Kiper seems to think they will get Quinn at 2 after Oakland takes the LSU QB at no. 1...
I say they stay put and take Joe Thomas. He seems to be the best fit, and the guy they want, and they can't trade down past AZ or they'll take him.
So I say they stay at two and take a LT that can start for them for the next 10 years...

G** Dammit! I meant Joe Thomas, not Jon Thomas. I probably just cursed him. Great job by me.

I think they will trade down. (I hope)
Detroit has so many holes to fill. And I heard on Detroit sports radio that they have no plans to take a QB. They're staying with Kitna.
If the Lions stay there, I hope they take Joe Thomas. The OL for Detroit is the main reason they can't win. Kitna has been sacked over 50 times this year and you can't develop deep WR routes if your QB is on his back.
Plus, the Lions were dead last in rushing so they definitely need to upgrade the OL.

I almost wish I hadn't put the trade down option here...it's such a pipe dream...it almost never happens...
There isn't anyone in this draft really worth trading up for so it's almost a moot point.

Yeah, people just dont want to give up what teams are asking for at those spots nowadays. If people didn't trade up to get Reggie Bush at 1, they probably wont for a long time.

1) Trading down won't happen unless someone BLOWS scouts away at the combine.
2) I have no idea who the Lions are looking at. I just read on ESPN.com that we shouldn't be surprised if they go with the WR out of Georgia Tech. I could also see them taking Quinn, Joe Thomas, or Adrian Peterson. They have so many needs that you could make an argument for tons of guys, but how many are worth being the 2nd guy off the board? If I were making the pick, I'd take Thomas though. They need him.
3) If we somehow do trade down, you can cross Brady Quinn off that list. No way would he get past the Browns (at either 3 or 4, depending on the coin flip).

I agree. I also agree that Joe Thomas will not get past Arizona...
oh my God, if they take Calvin Johnson with that pick people are going to riot...seriously.
He's great...no doubt...and he would be a fine pick...but you just can't, no way...not after what we've been through...
I think I would crap my pants if they took him.

I might get some heat for this, but I know I can't be the only one who thinks the Lions actually do need another WR.
We have Roy Williams. He is a stud.
Charles Rogers was cut in preseason and not one single team took a chance on him. He's out of football.
Mike Williams FINALLY earned some playing time down the stretch, but was laregly ineffective. He did catch a touchdown pass in the final game of the season, but it's questionable if he has shown enough for the Lions to bring him back next season. There are rumors that he is actually ready to quit football and never had the heart or desire it takes to make it in the NFL.
Mike Furrey finished the regular season with almost 100 catches and over 1,000 yards. He was a BARGAIN last year, when we signed him to a one year contract. He is a free agent now and you just know that other teams are gonna be interested. Hopefully he'll resign (and I think he will if Martz doesn't leave Detroit).
Ok, so for next year that means our WR situation looks like this:
For sure: Roy Williams Probable: Mike Furrey, Eddie Drummond (for kick returns only, as he is a horrible receiver) Questionable: Mike Williams
The only other WR's on the roster are Devale Ellis and Corey Bradford and I can't see either of them coming back. I doubt Detroit will want to go into next season counting on Josh McCown to be our 4th WR again.
Calvin Johnson, if he comes out, is supposedly the highest rated WR to come into the NFL since Keyshawn Johnson was drafted first overall.
So, there is a need at that position, he is one of the best WR prospects in a long time, and he's had no off the field problems. He really wouldn't be a bad pick ...........
................ if we hadn't already been down this road three times before. I don't think we can take him, just for the sheer principle of it. Although I really don't think Millen cares what anyone says, and I doubt he would hesitate to make that pick if he wanted to.
Whatever happens and whoever they take, they'll F it up. They're the Lions.

Well, I'm still excited to have Marinelli, and Joe Barry is a strong signing as D coordinator...
so while it's a broken record, things are looking up...
I really don't care who they take as long as they start winning some games...
If Calvin Johnson is that guy, so be it. He's a stud too.
