The decision was made to market him under the stage name Cro Cop because the last name Filipovic carries heavy negative baggage in the European markets the UFC wants to break into. Having a potential Champion/Headliner with a very similar name to mass murderer/concentration camp leader Miro Filipovic isn't a good idea...especially when it can easily be avoided by introducing the man to a new audience...in a new company...with a nickname that plays into a heroic sentiment.

LWPD (it's similar to the damage Adolph Hitler has done to the last name Hitler....ultimately for the same reasons)

Besides, "Cro Cop" sounds cooler, although a friend of mine still can't get it out quite right and he always says it "Cro Crop."

And it's funny. I'll always make a point of saying his name prominently, like "I think CRO COP will have a tough time against Barnett this time;" "Do you think CRO COP will make it in the UFC?"

The answers I get invariably begin, "Well, Cro Crop..."
