Cool, except no one will be watching. College football rules New Year's Day.

Cool, except no one will be watching. College football rules New Year's Day. And nobody south of Toledo watches hockey, anyway.

Must be a U.S. thing, who ever heard of football during the Wolrd Junior Hockey Championship. This is just a publicity stunt by Bettman since the Heritage classic in Edmonton, when the Oilers took on Montreal infront of 60,000+ fans. And I do belive that if you don't get snow during the winter you don't get a hockey team.

Don't get too flattered. All I can think of when I hear the name of the town is Corporal Klinger.

I wasn't aware that Buffalo was a college football hotbed... That is irrelevant. It makes little difference in the long run how many people attend this game, it's the TV ratings that matter, and they're not going to get ratings going up against college football.

Is it, though?
They should know they're not going to get sterling ratings in Buffalo...half the city's going to be at the stadium.
New Year's just isn't the bowl game hotbed it was in the past. The Big Game is a full week later and at least two other BCS games are after the 1st as well.
Of course NHL TV numbers are in the tank across the board, but I just don't think the Citrus and Gator Bowls are the ratings juggernauts that other bowl games would be.

If the NHL's goal is to grow the game, then the national TV ratings absolutely matter. The ratings will be fine in Buffalo regardless; it's a strong hockey market. However, events such as this are staged, at least partly, to increase interest in the sport beyond the home markets involved in the contest. My point being that the casual fan is likely one that would choose college bowl games over the hockey game. Thus, this is a poor day to hold this event.

they did this last year in Edmonton and it was huge in Canada...but then again Hockey is HUGE in Canada. I am sure a few US fans outside of Buffalo and Pittsburgh will tune in just to see if they are really going to do it...but that all depends on how much US national press coverage they can get.

Hey Pete the game in Edmonton was huge but it was a few years ago and one of the reason was the oldtimers game before the actual game when the 1980's Oilers dynasty reformed with Wayne Gretzky in an Edmonton uniform. If Buffalo tried an oldtimers game with Phil Housley, Glibert Perriault and Rene Robert and Have Pittsburgh have Mario play you might get more of a TV audience.

Really cool game to watch. Kind of appropriate that it goes to the shootout.
Anyone else watch?
